    You have ended up between the two ṣāds, O son of al-Mujallī,

    Between slapping that weakens your nape and rejection,

    حِلْفَ ضادَيْنِ فِيكَ وَضُعْفِ

    After two bāʾs: prostitution and coldness,

    An ally of two ḍāds within you, and weakness;

    لَمِغِيضٍ فِيهِ يَنابِيعُ كُنْفِ

    Then two shīns: ill-starred fortune and verse

    For a cesspit with springs of privies;

    Companion to two ʿayns: lack of reason and wealth,

    And sudden blindness from the blows of palms.

    And the two fāʾs will come: your loss—rather, your pov-

    erty—after the two ḥāʾs: privation and death.

    And when the sīns encompass you, O sor-

    row of the money-changers, you stand without fail:

    Folly in baseness, in a downfall

    Unending, in blackness of face and stupidity.
