They have indeed overstepped their bounds in striking you—

calamities that fulfilled their desires at your expense.

And how could they rise to reach a soul

whose neighbor Death wishes he could become?

    لَقَدْ عَظَّمَ الدَّهْرُ أَخْطارَها

    Calamity's ambition soared as high as you;

Time has indeed exalted their standing.

And who is it who can feel safe from calamities,

when they have sunk their claws into you?

Your generosity bereaved them of their ravages,

so they came to you seeking their revenge.

    دَعَتْكَ الْمَكارِمُ مُخْتارَها

    A realm will weep for you if granted long life;

the noble virtues named you her chosen one.

Who, then, will guard her domain when the enemy's

    battalions make for her home?

And who, other than the coward, will witness war,

when fear has made her defenders vanish?

And who will set the sword before her

as a barrier with which to dispel her shame?

And who is it who will multiply her enviers?

And who is it who will diminish her equals?

And who will see to affairs when they are brought forward,

and the people cannot bring them to a close?

And who is it who will prolong the fight with calamities

until he cuts their lives short?

May God water your grave's soil each day

with the sky's rain and its showers.

He departed like a steady rain that ceased

and entrusted its traces to the earth.

It passed, exacting thanks for its bounties

from the gardens' breeze and their blossoms.

Virtues: though their visible presence has departed,

benefactions have recounted their stories to us.

Each day I see, among calamities,

an onslaught upon us, in whose fire we burn.

Ah, if only I knew—and what use is 'if only'?—

when war will lay down its burdens.

And how long will the covenant of these bodies

be one that Death does not fear to violate?

The decrees of fate carry off their souls,

and wear out their skins over time.

We fled for our lives, while Fate

outstrips their sprinting at a walk.

And no souls would acknowledge death

    if it accepted their denial.

When life turns favorably toward a young man,

he expects its turning away through death.

And how can one seek the serenity of life—

one who is not granted even its troubles?

And the lifetime of one whom death has overtaken

is only like a stage of a journey he has traveled.
