لَيْتَif only الَّذِيthe one who قَلْبِيmy heart بِهِwith him مُغْرَمُenamored
يَعْلَمُknows مِنْof وَجْدِيmy longing كَماjust as أَعْلَمُI know
Would that the one my heart adores
knew of my longing as I do.
لَعَلَّهُperhaps he إِنْif لَمْdoes not يَصِلْgrant union رَغْبَةًout of desire
يَرِقُّsoftens لِلْكْرُوبِat the sorrows أَوْor يَرْحَمُshows mercy
Perhaps, if he will not grant union out of desire,
he will soften at my sorrows, or show mercy.
أَذَلَّنِيhas humbled me حُبُّكُمُlove for you فِيin الْهُوىpassion
فَماyet not حَمَتْنِيprotected me ذِلَّتِيmy abasement مِنْكُمْfrom you
Love for you has humbled me in passion,
yet my abasement has not protected me from you.
وَمَذْهَبٌand a practice ماnot زالَhas ceased to be مُسْتَقْبحاًdeemed abhorrent
فِيin الْحَرْبِwar أَنْthat يُقْتَلَbe killed مُسْتَسْلِمُone who has surrendered
And it has always been deemed an abhorrent practice
in war to kill one who has surrendered.
