You are a fortress and a refuge for the Muslims,

and a reserve and a treasure for whoever hopes for your bounty.

You never cease, in compassion for them,

and in their defense, to make pilgrimage and wage war.

These subjects have come, through your justice,

to live in the shade of a blessing none can wrest away.

They have settled in a stronghold of safety, never

disturbed there at any time, nor dislodged.

They have no remover of calamity, no dispeller

of distress but you, when they are hard pressed.

So, after their praise of God, no sound

is heard from them except praise of you.

When they pray to God, they deem nothing worthier

than a prayer through which you endure and grow mighty.

Yet, with the compassion they have come to know from

you, gentleness still holds firmness and a shove.

    ربما صَدَّعَ الْمُثَقَّفَ غَمْزُ

    You disciplined them without injustice, straightening a bend;

    sometimes a squeeze splits a straightened spear-shaft.

How can praise be slow to reach you, when

generosity has hastened, driven by urging and spurring?

A deep basin flooded petitioners and the highlands,

and a lofty height sheltered refuge-seekers and the lowlands.

Not like bounty where one is exhausted and battered by lowering

a bucket into its deep well and jerking it.

We have never seen you miss a goal

since we brandished you, as a keen sword is brandished.

No, nor have you been turned from your noble stock

by these calamities: cloth remains cloth.

Who, then, is the hope of a freeborn man in anguish,

who has passed the night with worry's sting in his breast?

He avoids complaint when he makes known

his private thoughts; a glance and a hint suffice for the noble.

Calamities have carved my bones; in them,

between my skin and flesh, lie cuts and gashes.

How can one close one's eyes to calamities,

when their fangs bite and pierce?

In an age that holds the chief, Wajih

al-Dawla, peerless, most exalted, most mighty,

who, between us and the nights,

always places, from his bounty, a check and a barrier.

O magnanimous man, never marred by baseness!

O cloud, never tainted by torment!

You safeguarded my watering-place when it was

frequented, and made what I sought abundant when it was a trickle.

You raised me when calamity had grown obstinate,

and neither kicking nor goading was of any use against it.

You clothed me in garments of blessing,

beside which silk-and-wool cloth and raw silk are coarse.

I have forsaken humankind for you, and have not

done wrong; my praising another is a blow to praise itself.

No riding camels bear my saddle, nor

does a stirrup carry my foot except on a journey to you.

Toward them the camels walk backward; but if they head

for you one day, their walk is leaping and bounding.

And when the sea appears before me, overflowing,

then my hanging back from it while thirsty is weakness.

Your radiant days are, for all days,

nothing but ornaments that adorn, and embroidery.

You are loftier than all that anyone can ascribe

    of preeminence, or attribute.
