لَكَto you الْخَيْرُgoodness قَدْindeed أَنْحىhas turned عَلَيَّagainst me زَمَانيmy time
وَمَاليand I have no بِماagainst what يَأْتِيbrings الزَّمَانُtime يَدَانِstrength (two hands)
May good be yours! My time has assailed me,
and I have no strength against what time brings.
كَأَنَّas though صُروفَthe reversals الدَّهْرِof time لَيْسَdoes not يَعُدُّهَاcount them
صُرُوفاًas reversals إِذَاif مَكْرُوهُهُنَّtheir harm عَدَانِيpasses me by
As though time does not count its reversals
as reversals if their harm passes me by.
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat غَيْرَsomeone other than الدَّهْرِtime بِالْجَوْرِunjustly قَادَنيled me
جَمَحْتُI would have bolted وَلكِنْbut فيin يَدَيْهِits two hands عِنَابِيmy reins (apparently intended)
Had anyone but time led me unjustly,
I would have bolted—but my reins are in its hands.
مُنِيتُI have been afflicted بِبَيْعِthrough selling الشِّعْرِpoetry مِنْfrom كُلِّevery بَاخِلٍmiser
بِخُلْفِwith the breaking of مَوَاعِيدٍpromises وَزُورِand the falsity of أَمَانِيhopes
In selling verse, I have been plagued by every miser
with broken promises and false hopes.
وَمَنْand who لِيfor me بِأَنْthat يُبْتَاعَit be bought مِنِّيfrom me وَإِنَّماand only
أُقِيمُI establish لِماءِfor the water of الْوَجْهِthe face (dignity) سُوقَa market of هَوَانِhumiliation
And who will ensure it is bought from me? I merely
set up a market of humiliation for my dignity.
ِإذَاwhenever رُمْتُI seek أَنْto أَلْقىmeet بِهِwith it الْقَوْمَthe people لَمْnot يَزَلْcease
حَيائِيmy sense of shame وَمَسُّand the touch of الْعُدْمِpoverty يَقْتَتِلانِthe two fight each other
Whenever I seek to meet people with it, still
my sense of shame and poverty's sting battle each other.
أَخَافُI fear سُؤَالَasking الْبَاخِلِينَthe misers كَأَنَّنِيas though I
مُلاَقِيfacing الْوَغىbattle كُرْهاًunwillingly بِقَلْبِwith the heart of جَبَانِa coward
I dread asking misers, as though I were
unwillingly facing battle with a coward's heart.
قَعَدْتُI sat بِمَجْرَىin the course of الْحَادِثَاتِcalamities مُعَرَّضاًexposed
لأَسْبَابِهاto their causes مَاwhatever شِئْنَthey wished فِيِّconcerning me أَتَانِيbefell me
I have sat in the path of calamities, exposed
to their workings; whatever they wished upon me befell me,
مُصَاحِبَa companion to أَيَّامٍdays تُجُرُّdrag ذُيُولَهاtheir skirts
عَلَيَّover me بِأَنْواعٍwith kinds مِنَof الْحَدَثانِmisfortune
keeping company with days that drag their skirts
over me with many kinds of misfortune.
أَرَىI see الرِّزْقَsustenance أَمَّاas for الْعَزْمُresolve مِنِّيon my part فَمُوشِكٌthen hastening
إِلَيْهِtoward it وَأَمَّاand as for الْحَظُّluck عَنْهُaway from it فَوانِthen lagging
I see sustenance; my resolve hastens
toward it, while my luck holds back from it.
وَهَلْand does يَنْفَعَنِّيbenefit me أَنَّthat عَزْمِيَmy resolve مُطْلَقٌunfettered
وَحَظِّيand my luck مَتىwhenever رُمْتُI seek الْمَطَالِبَgoals عَانِcaptive
And does it help me that my resolve is unfettered,
when my luck is captive whenever I seek my goals?
وَمَاand never زَالَhas ceased شُؤْمُthe ill omen الْجَدّof fortune مِنْfrom كُلِّevery طَالِبٍseeker
كَفِيلاًa guarantor بِبُعْدِof the remoteness of الْمَطلَبِthe goal الْمُتَدَانِيclose at hand
And ill luck has always, for every seeker,
guaranteed that the goal close at hand remains far away.
وَقَدْand sometimes يُحْرَمُis denied الْجَلْدُthe steadfast man الْحَرِيصُthe eager مَرَامَهُhis goal
وَيُعْطِىand is granted مُنَاهُhis wishes الْعَاجِزُthe incapable man الْمُتَوَانِيthe sluggish
And the steadfast, eager man may be denied his goal,
while the feeble laggard is granted his wishes.
وَمِنْand among أَنْكَدِthe bitterest الأَحْدَاثِmisfortunes عِنْدِيَin my view أَنَّنِيthat I
عَلَىagainst نَكَدِthe hardship of الأَحْدَاثِmisfortunes غَيْرُnot مُعَانِaided
And among the bitterest misfortunes, to me, is that I
am unaided against misfortune's bitterness.
فَهاso here أَنَاI am مَتْرُوكٌabandoned وَكُلَّand with every عَظِيمَةٍgreat calamity
أُقارِعُهاI battle it شَأْنَthe affair of الْخُطُوبِcalamities وَشَانِيand my affair
So here I am, left alone with every great calamity;
I battle it—an affair between calamities and me.
فَعَثْراًso, may it stumble! لِدَهْرٍfor an age لاَnot تَرىyou see فِيهِin it قَائلاًsomeone saying
لَعَاًmay you recover! لِفَتىًto a youth زَلَّتْslipped بِهِbeneath him الْقَدَمَانِboth feet
So may an age stumble, in which you see no one saying
"Rise again!" to a youth whose feet have slipped.
فَهَلْso will أَنْتَyou مُولٍbestowing نِعْمةًa favor فَمُبَادِرٌand then hastening
إِلَيَّto me وَقَدْand already أَلْقَىhas laid down الرِّدىdeath بِجِرانِits neck (camel image)
Will you, then, bestow a favor and hasten
to me, now that death has laid its neck to the ground,
وَحَطَّand has laid عَليَّupon me الدَّهْرُtime أَثْقالَthe burdens of لُؤْمِهِits baseness
وَتِلْكَand those الَّتِيwhich يَعْيَاare exhausted بِهاby them الثَّقَلاَنِthe two races (humans and jinn)
and time has laid upon me the burdens of its baseness,
burdens that weary both humankind and jinn,
وَمُسْتَخْلِصِيand rescuing me مِنْfrom قَبْضَةِthe grasp of الْفَقْرِpoverty بَعْدَمَاafter
تَمَلَّكَhas possessed رِقِّيmy bondage ذُلُّهُits abasement وَحَوانِيand held me
and rescue me from poverty's grasp, after
its abasement has made me its slave and held me fast,
وَجَاعِلُand making حَمْدِيmy praise مَاas long as بَقِيتُI live مُخَلَّداًeverlasting
عَلَيكَof you وَمَاand as long as أَرْسَتْstand firm هِضَابُthe hills of أَبَانِAban
and make my praise, for as long as I live, everlasting
in your honor, and as long as Aban's hills stand firm?
إِذاًthen تَقْتَنِيyou will acquire شُكْرَthe gratitude of امْرِيءٍa man غَيْرِnot هَادِمٍtearing down
بِكُفْرِthrough ingratitude for الأَيَادِيfavors مَاwhat ارْتيَاحُكَyour eagerness to give بانِbuilds
Then you will win the gratitude of a man who will not tear down
through ingratitude for favors what your generosity builds.
فَمِثْلُكَfor one like you أُنْسِUns الدَّوْلَةِal-Dawla انْتاشَrescued هَالِكاًa perishing man
أَخَيِذَa captive of مُلِمَّاتٍcalamities أَسِيرَa prisoner of زَمَانِtime
For one like you, Uns al-Dawla, has rescued a perishing man,
a captive of calamities, a prisoner of time,
وَغَادَرَand left مَنْone who يَخْشَىfears الزَّمَانَtime كَأَنَّماas though
يُلاَقِيهِhe meets it مِنْthrough مَعْرُوفِهِhis kindness بِأَمَانِin safety
and left one who fears time as though
he were facing it in safety through his kindness.
