قَدْindeed تَوالَتْhave followed one another عَلَيَّupon me مِنْكَfrom you أَيادِيfavors
عائِداتٍrenewed بِالْمَكْرُماتِwith noble gifts بَوادِيnewly bestowed
Favors from you have come upon me one after another,
Your generous hands have bestowed on me
Renewed and newly bestowed, bringing noble gifts.
Bounties returning like streams to the valleys.
ماnot أُبالِيI care إِذاif تَعَهَّدْنَthey tend مَغْناdwelling (word continues)
يَmy (completes 'my dwelling') بِأَنْabout the fact that لاnot يَصُوبَfalls صَوْبُdownpour الْعِهادِrecurring rains
If they tend my dwelling, I do not care
I care not if the youth pledge never
Should the recurring rains fail to pour down.
To shoot their arrows my way.
وَالْجَمِيلُand kindness الْمُعادُrenewed أَحْلىsweeter وَإِنْand even if أَزْdoes discredit (first part)
رَىdoes discredit (completion) بِشُكْرِيto my gratitude مِنَthan الشَّبابِyouth الْمُعادِrestored
And renewed kindness is sweeter—even if it
Again and again you allow me to taste
Puts my thanks to shame—than youth restored.
The sweetness of gifts from the hand of youth.
ماnot ثَنائِيmy praise وَإِنْand even if تَطاوَلَrises high إِلاّexcept
دُونَbelow آلائِكَyour blessings الْحِسانِlovely الْمَرادِlofty
My praise, however high it rises, can only
My praise, though it last, comes still
Fall short of your lovely, lofty blessings.
Short of your kindness so perfect in aim.
كَيْفَhow اَشْكُوI complain حَظَّاًa fortune عَلِيلاًailing وَحالاًand a condition
كانَwas فِيهاin it نَداكَyour bounty مِنْamong عُوّادِيmy sickbed visitors
How can I lament an ailing fortune and a plight
How complain of a hapless lot
In which your bounty was among my sickbed visitors?
When your care was by me in my plight?
سَوْفَwill أُثْنِيI praise عَلَىof الجِيادِthe steeds فَقَدْfor indeed أَهْpresented as a gift (first part)

I shall praise the steeds, for
Soon will I praise the steeds; for the steeds
The steeds have brought us the best of generous men.
Have brought to us the best of all steeds.
حَمَلَتْthey bore صَوْبَdownpour مُزْنَةٍa raincloud مِنْfrom بِلادٍlands
مِنْكَfrom you أَحْيَتْthey revived بِهِwith it رَبِيعَthe springtime بِلادِيmy land
They bore from other lands a raincloud's downpour
Bearing from your land to our barren land
From you, and with it revived the spring of my land.
Gifts that have revived the bloom of our fields.
كُنْتُI used to أَرتادُseek جُودَthe generosity كُلِّevery كَرِيمٍgenerous person
فَكَفىso made unnecessary جُودُthe generosity راحَتَيْكَyour two palms ارْتِيادِيmy seeking
I used to seek the bounty of every generous man,
I used to seek the bounty of all the great;
So the bounty of your two palms spared me that quest.
But your bounty suffices me now in my need.
زُرْتَناyou visited us مُنْعِماًbestowing favors وَماand not بَرِحَceased الزّاthe visitor (first part)
ئِرُthe visitor (completion) يَرْجُوhopes for الإِنْعامَgenerosity فِيin كُلِّevery وادِvalley
You visited us bestowing favors, though the visitor
A bountiful guest, you came and the seeker
Always hopes for gifts in every valley.
Still hopes for your favor in every vale.
وكَذاكَand likewise الْحَياlife-giving rain يَرُوحُsets out at evening مِنَfrom الْغَوْal-Ghawr, the lowlands (first part)

And so life-giving rain sets out from al-Ghawr at evening,
So the rain passes from the dusty plain,
And in Najd its morning clouds come at dawn.
And morning finds it clothed with flowers again.
لاnot أَرىI see لِيfor me حَقَّاًa claim عَلَيْكَupon you سِوىexcept بِkindness (first part)

رِّكَyour kindness (completion) عِنْدِيtoward me وَمَنْطِقِيand my words وَوِدادِيand my affection
I see no claim of mine upon you, save
I owe you no right but the right of love,
Your kindness to me, my words, and my affection.
Of speech in your praise, and affection sincere.
وَإِذاand when ماfor emphasis الْخُطُوبُcalamities كانَتْwere شِداداًsevere

And when calamities are severe,
And when disasters loom, pushing us near
They drive us to the strong and generous.
Destruction, to the generous souls we steer.
