Would you torment me with fire? Ask my ribs—

I have sighs enough within me to suffice.

Do not seek to burn me, for my tears

pit their water against your fire, and it shields me.

Were it not for their copious first outpourings,

the fire of your love—by your love!—would nearly destroy me.

How many a battle of longing has had its blaze kindled,

and there, with my eyelids, I confronted my ribs.
