مَهْلاًGently بَنِيsons of الصّوفِيِّal-Sufi إِنَّكُمُindeed you
لَيُعَدُّis surely reckoned دُونَbelow حصاتِكُمْyour pebble جَبَلِيmy mountain
Gently, sons of al-Sufi; indeed, to you,
Slow down, O mystics, for your pebbles
my mountain is reckoned lower than your pebble.
Are but a mountain to my debt.
لَوْif تُنْصِفُونَyou do justice to صَفاءَthe purity of نِعْمَتِكُمْyour bounty
ماnot احْتاجَneeded بَحْرُكُمْyour sea إِلىto وَشَلِيmy trickle
Were you to do justice to the purity of your bounty,
If you but knew the purity of your grace,
your sea would not have needed my trickle.
Your sea would need no grog to whet.
لاlet ... not يَشْهَرَنَّever brandish عَلَيَّagainst me سَيْفُكُمُyour sword
سَيْفاًa sword بِهِwith it فِيfor الْحَقِّjustice لَمْdid not يَصُلِfight
Let your sword never brandish against me
Unsheathe no swords against me—
a sword with which it has never fought for justice.
No blade of yours knows equity.
إِنَّindeed الْكَرِيمَthe generous man الْمَحْضَpure سُؤْدَدُهُhis nobility
مَنْone who لَمْdid not تَضِقْgrow straitened بِوَفائِهِthrough his faithfulness حِيَلِيmy resources
Indeed, the generous man whose nobility is pure
For one untainted in his honor,
is one whose faithfulness has not left my resources straitened.
No scheme can foil his constancy.
وَالْماجِدَand the illustrious man الْمَرْجُوَّhoped for نائِلُهُhis bounty
مَنْone who لَمْdid not يَخِبْfail فِيin وُدِّهِhis affection أَمَلِيmy hope
And the illustrious man whose bounty is hoped for
The noble one, hoped for in good faith,
is one in whose affection my hope has not failed.
Will never disappoint my wish.
بِئْسَwretched is الْجَزاءُthe recompense جَزَيْتُمُyou recompensed رَجُلاًa man
لَمْdid not يَخْفَbe hidden مَوْضِعُهُhis standing عَلَىfrom رَجُلِany man
What a wretched recompense you have given a man
Poor recompense you give a man
whose standing was hidden from no man.
Who never feared your feet would crush.
دَبَّتْcrept عَقارِبُكُمْyour scorpions إِلَيَّtoward me وَقَدْand even as
تَهْوِيfall إِلىto أَقْدامِكُمْyour feet قُبَلِيmy kisses
Your scorpions crept toward me, even as
Though you send scorpions unto me,
my kisses were falling at your feet.
My kisses seek your very heels.
