And a day on which we seized an opportunity

to enjoy life—for life's opportunities should be seized.

We spurred youth on with amusement that day,

and its horses bucked in delight,

    toward a garden whose breadth

never narrows, and whose shade never shrinks.

The most precious wishes there become easy,

and the costliest happiness comes cheaply.

And drinking companions who shared the cups of life,

never clouding them or spoiling their pleasure.

With them we blocked the paths of cares,

so they turned back, retreating on their heels.

Had a care intended to trouble us, it would have found no

path by which to reach us there.

We spent the day like two armies in battle: charging

against the Arabs were its pure-blooded Turks.

Beside a pool whose rāʾ was given a vowel,

so it neither dwindles nor decreases.

Its water sang joyfully for us,

and its pipes rose to dance.

Its doming water shows you jewels,

floating upon it and diving deep.

And a smiling thing with golden lips,

with what they fashioned of it in onyx or set with gems,

    lofty, pouring molten silver

upon gold of the purest casting.

where the hollow-bellied complains of the full-bellied.

Close by and well-watered: neither these

    are frightened nor those hunted.

You see there a herd of gazelles, secure,

while the wolf twitches among them.

And a fountain whose description neither

    Jarir sought nor al-Ahwas attempted.

As though it had a goal in the sky,

which it eagerly strives to attain.

When its stature fulfills its upward reach,

a neck that snaps lets it down.

The drinkers crowned it with an orange,

and I thought the fly-whisk was sprouting palm fronds:

a palm-like tree made of water,

like an unbraided gray-haired woman's locks.

And lofty trees whose songbirds' melodies

stir the discerning and make them dance.

Their song awakens longing, though its clear strains are obscure,

and moves to grief, though its easy strains are intricate.

And a meadow whose poppies unveiled its blossoms,

leaving the eye bewildered or fixed in wonder.

As though a company stood there,

wholly devoted to it in festive finery.

    Their crowns differ in shape,

and their tunics imitate the flowers' delicate robes.

Among them are white ones, pure white in hue,

    whose purest camphor-white delights you.

And red ones tinged with blue,

    resembling cheeks when pinched.

And two companions, the like of whom are chosen

and singled out for a day of wine.

Two partners whose meaning in song

is subtler, and whose phrasing more concise.

When they sing, even the forbearing man remains

as though his flank muscles were being sliced.

And among the cupbearers, one with languid eyelids

bids for hearts and finds them cheap.

His glances would suffice him, if he wished,

without the cup, but he is more avid.

So there he is: ask his eyes,

and do not probe my account of him.

When we set out in the morning for pleasure,

the one who parts from us has the smallest share.

shrink in worth and seem deficient.

to embrace everyone when others restrict their gifts.

the wrongs of time, and how often purged them!

And whenever the sea of poetry came into view,

I would dive deepest for its pearls.

before him, no tawny lion was ever loved.

Because of him, every lion becomes dear to me,

every fierce one; lions lure me to their company.

because of it he seems to charge, though he does not run.

Like a lion fresh from its prey,

the remaining blood of its victim visible in its mouth.

God be praised for attaining a joy that love promised,

    fulfilling its pledge despite separation.

Time granted its serenity, and we were swept along

by joy, speeding through its course.

With a tunic-clad beloved who erases the wrong of his rejection,

for beauty is one of the beloved's kindnesses.

Roses are in his cheeks, and wine in

his kisses, and magic in his eyelids.

As though the garden had borrowed beauties

from his lovely workmanship and glorious distinction.

So its blossoms' delicacy belongs to his oft-kissed lips,

and its bān trees' rapture to his swaying figure.

by the garden, of every marvelous kind.

eyes, and within it the life of hearts.

The marvels of its blossoms have appeared,

in which you encounter every beauty and fragrance.

Among them, a red flower embraced by a yellow one,

like the lover's color and the beloved's color.

Their cheeks pressed together in an embrace,

having caught their watcher off guard.

    الْخَطْبُ أَعْظَمُ قِيمَةً مِنْ أَدْمُعِي

    Weeping, however prolonged, cannot satisfy me;

the calamity outweighs my tears in worth.

Must I, whenever time takes something precious

from me, make tears my refuge?

Why does it not grieve me that my soul has not departed

in sorrow, and that my innards have not torn apart?

This heart was not the first rock,

solid, struck, yet never split apart.

It laid stones over the kindest man one could hope for,

and heaped earth upon a radiant, noble lord.

O men, help against an unforeseen affliction,

an event that was never expected!

I never thought I would resort to patience against

a time obsessed with separating loved ones.

By God, time has never wronged or assaulted

with anything harsher or more painful than this affliction.

A calamity that torments calamities themselves, a crushing blow:

whoever does not die grieving for it has not grieved.

May the death-announcer never sound! The least harm he wrought

was to crack the heart and deafen the ear.

    O Qul—a cry from one grief-stricken, draining

his tear ducts' water and the fire in his ribs.

Lamenting through the day, when his night returns,

the snakebitten sleeps, but his eyes do not.

Brimming with grief, so there is no room for sorrow

    or joy within his heart.

Even one who does not weep from sorrow weeps for him

in anguish, and an unbroken heart is split apart.

I complain to the days of my loss in you,

if only the days could hear an aching man's complaint.

And I pass the night denied repose, as though

fate had never startled me with anything more dreadful.

And a bereaved man's wail beside you I joined

to the repeated moan of a woman weeping over you.

Grief for you has overcome the consolers; I see no one

who does not rival my tears and lamentation.

    وإِذا بَكَيْتُ وَجَدْتُ مَنْ يَبْكي مَعي

    If I am patient, I find no other patient man like me;

if I weep, I find others weeping with me.

Your day has lowered my gaze; indeed, the loss

of you shattered my ribs, and your absence made my bed restless.

You have humbled me before calamities, and whoever suffers

a loss like yours one day is abased and bowed.

Your calamity has made the heart's anguish seem slight,

like a flood overwhelming a brimming pool.

O Qul, it was not life that betrayed us; rather,

time itself was struck down on that fatal morning.

I would not have feared such a crime against you

had this age possessed reason or understanding.

After this, rage, O time, or desist; take

whomever you wish, O turns of death, or leave them.

He whose departure most grieves us has taken kindness with him,

and generosity has announced the death of the loftiest ever mourned.

Death has drained a surging, overflowing sea,

and the sword has felled a lofty, unassailable peak.

From the tree of lineage, exalted in descent,

and the stock of generosity, abundant at its source.

If that sky has darkened, then empty

of its brightest full moon is the place of rising.

Or if those dwellings have grown barren, it is after

you bade farewell like a departing raincloud.

How grievous to me is losing one like you, dead,

who cast off youth while still wearing its mantle.

Had those qualities been granted more time, they would never attain

anything more wondrous or marvelous than your eminence.

Tell me: for which virtue have you not made me weep,

if my heart and tearful eyes did not weep for you?

For your renowned beauty, or your perfection,

so celebrated, or your freely bestowed bounty?

What I say of you has never opposed the common judgment,

that I should have to offer proof for what I claim.

Will the young men neglect their pledge to you? Indeed,

their pledge was never neglected in your keeping.

For seekers of bounty, yours was the most fertile

hand, and you were the swiftest to answer a cry for help.

Their gatherings are adorned now only by your memory,

and bereft of that proud, splendid man.

    Time severs after long connection,

and scatters after harmony and gathering.

Shame upon the calamity that struck you, for it

bypassed the lowly for the mightiest and most invulnerable.

I never imagined that oppression would reach

the loftiest noble through a base man's hand.

Fate's ambition rose high on the day of your loss,

and it shot toward a target of distant reach.

How could you prevail, how wield your might, alone,

single-handed, amid a throng of foes?

Defense was hard, though you would not have lacked a defender,

but for decrees that no one can repel.

You met death, on the day you met it,

nobly, more valiant there and braver than death.

You scorned disgrace, with death preferable to it,

and plunged among the points of leveled spears.

Had you chosen safety, you would have found it—

but how, when a lion never bows its cheek?

One like you could die only cast down

among sharp swords and splintered spears.

May streaming tears rain upon you; they would not

but for you have put pouring clouds to shame.

May the clouds' downpour weep for you, for it

was never swifter to give than you.

May a night-traveling raincloud tend your resting place; whenever

it departs, may it return, and whenever it leaves, come back.

May it cover you in longing, visiting and returning,

with a greeter from its rainclouds, and one bidding farewell.

May it gift you embroidered gardens; it merely

offers spring to a fertile spring.

Let no day that pleased the enemies embolden them:

death is folded within that hope.

Vengeance is assured, and in our right hands

are bright swords like flashing streaks of lightning.

And slender spears rush toward the enemy's openings,

with the thirsty one's longing for the clear watering place.

It is time for the age that has lost its way

to straighten onto the broad, clear road,

correcting the nights' mistake concerning you,

    and disowning their atrocious crime.

Did time's giving you rein deceive you,

a long tether in your error's deadly pasture?

Why not recall how Majd al-Din's

resolves swept you in al-Ghawr like a raging gale,

and the morning at ʿAlʿāl that made you drink

from bright swords the steeped poison of blows?

Never feel safe from a sword-sharp resolve

establishing justice at the decisive moment,

with spears never couched except for your destruction,

and blades forged for nothing but your ruin.

O best of all named, most generous of all looked to,

most dutiful of those called, noblest of those invoked,

Though our affliction is great, our grief

is not rebellious, yet forgetting will not obey.

We surely see your survival as a blessing deserving

thanks as long as humankind is watered and tended.

You have known, without having to be taught,

that sorrow and anguish bring no remedy.

Far be it! It is another, not you, whom calamity constricts,

someone other than you who tires beneath a crushing burden.

The world has yielded to you like the loveliest garden,

whose wafting fragrance has enthralled the breeze.

May the precinct of your glory never stand deserted,

ever, nor the flock within your protection be alarmed,

as long as one in grief yearns for a comforting companion, and as long as

one who stays feels affection for one resolved to leave.
