أوَ ما تَرى قَلَقَ الْغَدِيرِ كَأَنَّما
يَبْدُوappears لِعَيْنِكَto your eye مِنْهُfrom it حَلْيُornaments مَناطِقِgirdles
يَبْدُو لِعَيْنِكَ مِنْهُ حَلْيُ مَناطِقِ
Do you not see the pool’s restless motion, as though
And do you not see the pool's trembling, as though
before your eyes there appeared from it the jewels of girdles?
girdle ornaments appeared from it before your eye?
مُتَرَقْرِقٌrippling لَعِبَplayed الشُّعاعُthe sunbeam بِمائِهِwith its water
مُتَرَقْرِقٌ لَعِبَ الشُّعاعُ بِمائِهِ
فَارْتَجَّso it quivered يَخْفُقُit throbs مِثْلَlike قَلْبِthe heart of الْعاشقِthe lover
فَارْتَجَّ يَخْفُقُ مِثْلَ قَلْبِ الْعاشقِ
The pool rippled as the frog played with its water,
It ripples; the sunbeam played upon its water,
so it shuddered, throbbing like a lover’s heart.
so it quivered, throbbing like a lover's heart.
فَإِذاand when نَظَرْتَyou looked إِلَيْهِat it راعَكَawed you لَمْعُهُits gleam
فَإِذا نَظَرْتَ إِلَيْهِ راعَكَ لَمْعُهُ
وَعَلَلْتَand you refreshed طَرْفَكَyour gaze مِنْfrom سَرابٍa mirage صادِقِtrue
وَعَلَلْتَ طَرْفَكَ مِنْ سَرابٍ صادِقِ
And when you look upon it, its flash startles you,
And when you look at it, its gleam awes you,
and you beguile your gaze with a mirage that tells true.
and you refresh your gaze with a true mirage.
