O kindler of the fire, who has spared no effort in
extracting rosewater with all his might,
أَوَand do ...? ماnot ترَىyou see الْقَمَرthe moon الْمُحْرِّقَburning ظَالِماًunjustly
قَلْبِيmy heart بِنارٍwith a fire مِنْfrom جَفاهُhis coldness وَبُعْدِهِand his distance
And do you not see the moon, unjustly burning
my heart with the fire of his coldness and distance?
انْظُرْlook إِلَيْهِat him تَضَرَّجَتْhave flushed وَجَناتُهُhis cheeks
خَجَلاًwith shame وَقَدْand indeed عاتَبْتُهُI reproached him فيfor صَدِّهِhis turning away
Look at him: his cheeks have flushed
with shame, now that I have reproached him for turning away.
إِنْif تَخْبُdies down نارُكَyour fire فَاقْتَبِسْthen take a spark مِنْfrom مُهْجَتِيmy heart's blood
أَوْor يَفْنَruns out وَرْدُكَyour roses فَاقْتَطِفْthen pluck مِنْfrom خَدِّهِhis cheek
If your fire dies down, then take a spark from my heart's blood;
Or if your roses run out, then pluck some from his cheek.
