أَمَدَّmay extend اللهُGod ظِلَّكَyour shade ياO سِعِيدُSa'id
عَلَيَّover me فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it الظِّلُّthe shade الْمَدِيدُfar-reaching
May God extend your shade, O Sa'id,
May God prolong your shade, O Sa'eed
Over me, for it is far-reaching shade.
Upon me, for it is lasting shade
وَعِشْتَand may you live تُصاحِبُkeeping company with الدُّنْياthe world خُلُوداًforever
وَتَصْحَبُكَand keep you company الأَيامِنُgood omens وَالسُّعُودُand good fortune
And may you live in the world's company forever,
And you live accompanying eternity forever
And may good omens and good fortune keep you company.
With you are auspicious days and good fortune
إِذاif ماemphatic particle كانَis مِثْلُكَone like you لِيfor me مُجِيراًa protector
وَمِثْلُكَand one like you لاnot يَجُودُgives generously بِهِwith him الْوُجُودُexistence
If one like you is my protector,
If someone like you protects me
And existence bestows no one like you,
None like you exist in existence
فَإِنَّthen indeed بَعِيدَthe distant ماwhat أَرْجُوI hope for قَرِيبٌnear
وَإِنَّand indeed قَرِيبَthe near ماwhat أَخْشىI fear بَعِيدُfar away
Then what I hope for, however distant, is near,
Though I wish the distant near
And what I fear, however near, is far away.
And fear the near is far
عَلَوْتَyou rose above بَنِيthe sons of الوَرىhumankind كَرَماًin nobility وَجُوداًand in generosity
وَحَسْبُكَand enough for you مِنْof عُلىًeminence كَرَمٌnobility وَجُودُand generosity
You have risen above the sons of humankind in nobility and generosity,
You exceeded all people in generosity and munificence
And nobility and generosity are eminence enough for you.
Your excellence is generosity and munificence
نَماكَbegot you أَبٌa father نَماهُbegot him خَيْرُthe finest جَدٍّgrandfather
كَذاthus الآباءُfathers تَنْمِيهاbeget them الْجُدُوُدُgrandfathers
You sprang from a father who sprang from the finest grandfather;
A father raised you, raised by the best of ancestors
Thus do fathers spring from grandfathers.
Thus fathers are raised by ancestors
هُمُthey بَدَءُواbegan الْعُلىgreatness فَسَمَوْاand so rose عُلُوَّاًon high
وَأَنْتَand you لِخَيْرِof the best ماwhat بَدَؤُواthey began مُعِيدُa renewer
They pioneered greatness and rose to lofty heights,
They began nobility, so they ascended in nobility
And you renew the best of what they began.
And you return the good they began
وَماand not جُحِدَتْwere denied مَحاسِنُmerits فَخْرِglory قَوْمٍa people
خَلائِقُكَyour traits الْحِسانُfine بِهاto them شُهُودُwitnesses
Nor are the merits of a people's glory denied:
The virtues of a people were never denied
Your fine qualities bear witness to them.
Your good manners bear witness to them
وَلَوْand if سَجَدَprostrated themselves الوَرَىhumankind لأَبَرِّbefore the most beneficent خَلْقٍbeing
يَداًin giving hand وَنَدىًand bounty لَحُقَّwould surely be due لَكَto you السُّجُودُprostration
And if humankind prostrated themselves before the most beneficent of beings,
If the world prostrated to the most righteous of creations
In hand and bounty, prostration would rightfully be yours.
In friendship and in yearning, prostration would be your right
وَسُدْتَand you attained lordship فَماso none أَحَقَّmore deserving بِكُلِّof every مَجْدٍglory
سِواكَother than you إِذاwhen تَفَرَّدَstands alone مَنْwhoever يَسُودُholds lordship
And you have attained lordship; none is more deserving of every glory
You closed all glory from others
Than you, when the one who rules stands without peer.
When the singular master dominated
