أَتانِيَ أَنَّ الْمَجْدَ عَنِّي سائِلٌ

وَأَنَّ الْعُلى لَمْ يَعْدُنِي فِيكَ عَتْبُها

News reached me that glory was asking about me,

And that the exalted one no longer reproaches me for you.

فَيَا فَخْرَ شَخْصٍ حَلَّ سِرَّكَ ذِكْرُهُ

وَيا سَعْدَ نَفْسٍ سَرَّ مِثْلَكَ قُرْبُها

O pride of one whose mention is a secret delight,

O joy of a soul made happy by your nearness!

وَلا عُذْرَ إلاّ أنَّ لُبّاً شَدَهْنَهُ

نَوائِبُ مَغْفُورٌ بِجُودِكَ ذَنْبُها

My only excuse is that an infatuated heart enslaved me –

A forgiven sin, thanks to your generosity.

وَما كانَ لِي لُوْلاكَ بِالرَّيِّ مَنْزِلٌ

وَإِنْ شَعَفْتْ غَيْرِي وَتَيَّمَ حُبُّها

Without you, the land would not have been my dwelling place,

Even if others pitied me and sympathized.

وَما هِي إِلاّ كَالْبِلادِ وإِنَّما

بِوَطْئِكَ فَلْيَفْخَرَ عَلَى الْمِسْكِ تُرْبُها

It is nothing but a land – let its soil pride itself

On being trodden by you!
