My lord, can you bear to be without your man of letters,

truly, and turn away from your beloved?

And is your lineage not from Ali,

    and eminence your smallest share?

And have you not journeyed—were you able

to find your like or your equal?

Who is like your poet, who

    has dazzled creation—or your orator?

    He offers you beauties

that make other beauties count among your flaws:

wafts of praise that have never ceased

to spare you the need for wafts of your perfume.

As for Damascus, it has embraced

a moon that rose from the bosoms of your robes.

    فَاللهُ يُؤْمِنُ مِنْ مَغِيبِكْ

    Were it not for your rising, it would not shine;

so may God protect us from your setting.

God be praised for your east wind's refreshing breath! How often

hopes and the dew of your south wind arrive!

How often you conceal your favors, yet

your generosity never ceases to give you away.
