    Oh, would that my hand had been paralyzed, and I had not been seen

    by anyone as I stretched out a hand to him to beg.

    And would that my fortunes’ sickness, born of my destitution,

    had been lodged by Time in my soul and body.

    Rather, would that I had never been created; and when he allotted

    life to me, would that its allotter had shortened my span.

    وَلَمْ يَعِشْ مَنْ تقَضّى عَيْشُهُ نَكَدا

    For death is more restful than the life inflicted on me;

    nor has he lived whose life was spent in misery.
