And they stoked hatred in the firewood night
لمن شجر قد أثقلتها ثمارها
For whom the tree is laden with fruit
طاب الصبوح لنا فهاك وهات
The dawn shone brightly for us, so come here -
تبأ لحماك التي
The dove whose cooing
قد بلغتك خطا المهرية الرثسم
The clumsy lines of al-Mahriyyah have reached you,
أي شيء ملء السماوات والأرض
What fills the heavens and earth, though it be
آنست بالعراق برقا منيرا
I sensed lightning in Iraq, radiant
يا نار أشواقي لا تخمدي
O fire of my passions, do not die out
من سحر عينيك الأمان الأمان
From the magic of your eyes, security, security
قم يا غلام ودع مقالة من نصح
Arise, O youth, and leave the talk of the adviser,
للذة العيش والأفراح أوقات
For the joys of life and times of delight, times
هويته رشئي الطرف والجيد
My beauty's gaze is gentle and face radiant
بعذارك الفتان أعذر
With your charming excuses, I excuse you,
صن ناظرا مترقبا لك أن ترى
Be my watcher, waiting for you to be seen
أما وبياض مبسمك التقي
By the whiteness of your smiling dawn,
خدمت بديوان المحبة ناظرا
I served in the ministry of love as an overseer
مالي وللتشبيب بالأوطان
What is my concern with roaming the homelands
لا تقنطن إذا ما حالة عسرت
Do not despair when a situation becomes difficult
الراح روحي فكيف أهجرها
The breeze is my soul, so how can I abandon it?
عفت المدام ولو ذابت من الذهب
I abstain from wine though it flows like gold
كم غرض فيه للحظ رشاق
How many a goal wherein is for the glance flirtation
ما انتفاعي بالقرب منكم إذا لم

أراق دم الليل سيف الصباح
The sword of dawn shed the blood of night
الروض بين متوج ومشنف
The garden amid the crowned and shaded trees,
كم ليلة بت لا ضوء الصباح أرى
How many a night have I spent sleepless and restless,
أمنت الليالي وأقدارها
You believed the nights and their destinies,
يا قلب كم ذا اللجج الفاضح
O heart, how much is this turbulent flood
وحق الهوى عن ذكركم ليس لي شغل
It is truly my right to always think of you,
يا رائد القوم هذا النبت والزهر
O leader of the people, this is the plantation and the blossom
بملكك أيام الزمان تطيب
With your kingdom, time's days are sweet
ظبي يخال البرق من بريقه
A deer whose lightning flashes from its cup
حديث عذل وغرام قديم
A tale of blame and old passion
هذا هو الربع ما يغنيك مغناه

My master, my master, your book is sweeter
تأودت كالغصن الأملد
She swayed like a supple branch,
وبي هندسي الشكل يسبيك لحظه
My engineer-shaped love captivates you in an instant,
بيضاء تسطو بسواد أحداق
White radiance flows with the darkness of her eyes
يستوجب النصر من صحت عزائمه
Victory is deserved by those whose determination is strong,
عثرت يا دهر فهل من مقيل
I stumbled, O fate, is there anyone to lean on?
قل لمن يلوم
Tell the one who blames
ويح قلب المحب ماذا يقاسي
Alas! The heart of a lover, what does it endure?
حيت فأحيت بطيب رياها
She came to life, and with her gentle breeze revived me,
حبذا طيف علوة حين أسرى
Blessed was the ghost of Alwa when it passed by
أيقنت بأن حاجتي ليس تضيع

نحن في روضة وزهر ونهر
We are in a garden of flowers and a stream
أفديه إن حفظ الهوى أو ضيعا

خذ من حديث شؤونه وشجونه
Take the tale of his affairs and sorrows
تهن بأشهب مثل الشهاب

تنقبت بالنور والنور
سواي في سلوته يطمع
إن عينا منكم قدء ظمئت
يا بارقا إذكر الحشى حزنه
حسبك لا يغني سوال الديار
تبسم ثغر الزهر عن شنب القطر
قمت ليل الصدود إلا قليلا
نديمي ماس الآس في سندسيه
أعيونا أدارها أم عقارا
الله يكفي الملك أشأم طلعة
لماك والخد النضر
الزمان سعيد مواتي
حديث دمعي عن غرامي شجون
إذا رأيت الهلال والغصنا
دع العين تأخذ منك ما يشتهي القلب
بدر تم له من الشعر هاله
نشرت غدائرهن ليلاً ساترا
