1. By the whiteness of your smiling dawn,
And the darkness of your lively gazelle's eye,
١. أما وَبَياضِ مَبْسِمِكَ التَّقيِّ
وَسُمْرَةِ مِسْكَةِ اللَّعَسِ الشَّهِيِّ
2. Your cheeks are roses sprinkled with camphor,
Adorned by the softness of velvet.
٢. وَرُمَّانٍ مِنَ الْكافورِ تَعْلُو
عَلَيْهِ طَوابِعُ النَّدِّ النَّدِيِّ
3. Your figure is slender as a rod when bent,
I fear its fragility under the weight of jewelry.
٣. وَقَدِّ كالْقَضِيبِ إِذْا تَثَنَّى
خَشِيتُ عَلَيْهِ مِن ثِقْلِ الْحُلِيِّ
4. Yearning has made my body sick,
And your union has quenched my thirst after being far away.
٤. لَقَدْ أَسْقَمْتِ بِالْهِجْرانِ جِسْمي
وَأَعْطَشَني وِصالُكِ بَعْدَ رِيِّ
5. How long can I hide my torment and tears,
When my secret heart pours out its hidden sorrows?
٥. إِلى كَمْ أكْتُمُ الْبَلْوَى وَدَمْعي
يَبُوحُ بِمُضْمَرْ السِّرِّ الْخَفِيِّ
6. How often do I complain of my love-madness to the negligent one,
Woe to the ardent lover from the heedless beloved!
٦. وَكَمْ أشْكو لِلاهِيَةٍ غَرامي
فَوَيْلٌ لِلشَّجِيِّ مِنَ الْخَليِّ
7. Her languid eyelids are firmly closed,
Gripping the eager heart tightly.
٧. مُمَنَّعَةٌ لَها جَفْنٌ سَقيمُ
شَديدُ الأخْذِ لِلْقَلْبِ الْبَرِيِّ
8. Her eyebrows tease and flirt with me,
Like arrows released from a strong bow.
٨. تُغازِلُني وَتَزْوِرني حاجِبَيْها
كمَا انْبَرَتِ السِّهامُ عَنِ الْقسِيِّ
9. They penetrate the ranks with their lightning,
Can the scent of fine musk be concealed?
٩. وَتَخْتَرِقُ الصُّفوفَ برَوْقِ فِيها
وَهَلْ يَخْفى شَذى الْمِسْكِ الذَّكِيَّ
10. Her cheeks on a slender waist,
And her apron on a plump hip,
١٠. وِشاجاها عَلى خَصْرٍ عَديمٍ
وَمِئْزَرُها عَلى رِدْفٍ مَلِيِّ
11. Her curls on a dark night,
And her face veil on a brilliant moon.
١١. وَمِعْجَرُها عَلى لَيْلِ بَهِيْمٍ
وَبُرْقُعُها عَلى قَمَرٍ سَنِيِّ
12. The thorns of henna ward off gray hair from her cheeks,
Like thorns protecting a delicate rose.
١٢. يَذودُ شَبا القَنا عَنْ وَجْنَتَيْها
كَمَنْعِ الشَّوْكِ لِلْوَرْدِ الْجَنِيِّ
13. When I try to pluck it with my eyes,
It says "Beware of forbidden pasture!"
١٣. إِذْا ما رُمْتُ أقْطِفُهُ بِعَيْنيْ
يَقولُ حَذارِ مِنْ مَرْعىً وَبِيِّ
14. My tongue is a sword from my sheath
And my glances are the strike of a brave warrior,
١٤. لَسانُ السَّيْفِ مِنْ أَدْنى وُشاتِي
وَمِنْ رُقَبايَ طَرْفُ السَّمْهَرِيِّ
15. As if her eyelids hold in every heart,
The power of the mighty holy one.
١٥. كَأَنَّ لِجَفْنِها فِي كُلِّ قَلْبٍ
فِعالَ الْمَشْرَفِيِّ الأَشْرَفِيِّ
16. A sword that came to him passed down,
From the Prince of the Faithful, from the Prophet,
١٦. حُسامٌ جاءَ مُنْتَقِلاً لَهُ عَن
أميرِ الْمُؤمِنينَ عَنِ النَّبيِّ
17. We will hear about them what we have heard,
Of the Owner of the Trenchant Sword and Ali.
١٧. سَنَسْمَعُ عَنْهُما ما قَدْ سَمِعْنا
بِهِ عَن ذِي الْفَقارِ وَعَن عَلِيِّ
18. When his noble hand shakes theirs,
Say which of the two shines brighter!
١٨. إِذْا يَدُهُ الْكَرِيمَةُ صافَحَتْهُ
فَقُلْ فِي لاَمِعٍ أو أَلْمَعيِّ
19. People will argue who is the actual sword,
When they compete to reach the summit.
١٩. يَقولُ النَّاسُ أَيُّهُما حُسامٌ
إِذْا اسْتَبَقْقا إلى هامِ الْكَمِيِّ
20. He chose the finest and ignored the rest,
By taking what is best or rejecting what is worthless.
٢٠. تَخَيَّرَهُ وَعافَ سِواهُ خُبْراً
بِأَخْذِ الْجَيْدِ أَو رَدِّ الرَّدِيِّ
21. He struck his enemies with an arrow from it,
Hitting the farthest intended target.
٢١. رَمَى أعْداءَهُ مِنْهُ بِسَهْمٍ
يُصِيبُ نِهايَةَ الْغَرَضِ الْقَصِيِّ
22. Abu al-Fath, boast and begin with a soul,
Nobler than the highest celestial sphere!
٢٢. أبَا الْفَتْحِ افْتَخِر وَابْدَأ بِنَفْسٍ
لَها شَرَفٌ عَلى الفَلَكِ الْعَلِيِّ
23. For you is the generosity which outshines valleys,
So its red flash humbles the pretentious.
٢٣. لَكَ الْكَرَمُ الّذي فَضَحَ الْغَوادي
فَحُمْرَةُ بَرْقِها خَجَلُ الدَّعِيِّ
24. Its water irrigates a specific land at times,
While you provide for poor and rich alike.
٢٤. تُخصُّ بِمائِها فِي الْحِينِ أَرْضاً
وَمالُكَ لِلْفَقيرِ وَلِلْغَنيِّ
25. You have an army which, if it marched on land,
Would flatten the hills like a roaring flood.
٢٥. لَكَ الْجَيْشُ الّذي إن جاسَ أرْضاً
دَحا الهَضَباتِ كالسَّيْلِ الأتيِّ
26. Kings seek refuge in it while hunting,
Like the encircling halo around the brilliant moon.
٢٦. تَحُفُّ بِهِ الْمُلوكُ الصِّيدُ فِيهِ
إِحاطَةَ هالَةِ الْقَمَرِ السَّنِيِّ
27. When its horse galloped and grew thirsty,
It quenched their thirst with the blood of the valiant hero.
٢٧. إِذْا عَطِشَتْ جِيادْ الْخَيْلِ فِيهِ
سَقاها مِنْ دَمِ البَطَلِ الأبِيِّ
28. How can a trembling pillar stand firm,
When you are lighter than a running lion?
٢٨. وَكَيْفَ ثَبَتَّ طَوْداً مُشْمَخِرّاً
وَأنتَ أَخَفُّ مِن أَسَدٍ جَرِيِّ
29. In that white hand is a stick,
Which accomplishes every deed like Moses.
٢٩. وفِي تِلْكَ اليَدِ الْبَيْضاءِ عَضْبٌ
يُحَقِّقُ كُلَّ فِعْلٍ موسَوِيِّ
30. When spears tangled, it destroyed them,
Like rope entwined around sticks.
٣٠. إِذْا اشْتَجَرَ الْقَنا أَفْناهُ حَطْماً
كَمَلْتَقِفِ الْحِبالِ مَعَ الْعِصِيَّ
31. The Solomon-like kingdom is unparalleled,
Adorned with Yusuf-like beauty.
٣١. سُلَيْمانِيُّ مُلْكٍ لاَ يُضاهَى
تزَيَّنَ بِالْجَمالِ الْيُوسُفِيِّ
32. With it you overpowered tyrants by force,
And gave the weak justice from the strong.
٣٢. قَهَرْتَ بِهِ الْجَبابِرَةَ اقْتِداراً
وَأَنْصَفْتَ الضَّعيفَ مِنَ القَوِيِّ
33. If you are like hell to an enemy,
You are like heaven to a friend.
٣٣. فَإِنْ تَكُ كالْجَحيمِ عَلى عَدُوٍ
فَإِنَّكَ كالْجِنانِ عَلى الْوَلِيِّ
34. You remain for this world a beauty,
Happy fate in a pleasant lifetime.
٣٤. بَقِيتَ لِهذِهِ الدُّنْيا جَمالاً
سَعيدَ الْجَدِّ فِي عُمُرٍ هَنِيِّ
