1. I sensed lightning in Iraq, radiant,
It covered the unseen and plunged roaring,

2. And found the scent of the morning breeze pleasant,
It almost flew, if not for the land restraining it.

3. It recalled from the meadows of al-Karkh a garden
That remains blossoming, with clear running water.

4. It picked from the Full Moon some light,
And obtained from the crown’s rising place some light.

5. Convey us, O lightning, to the seat of the caliphate,
To fulfill our vows tomorrow at the place of prostration.

6. Its threshold’s soil grows splendor,
Its weather poured generosity until it rained.

7. Kings have kissed it until we doubted,
Did they count its sanctuaries or its glories?

8. O Imam of guidance, greetings, greetings,
I increased its perfume so repeat it.

9. God distributed among you the virtues of people
Among whom it was allotted and scattered.

10. The people of the house whom God has removed
From them all impurity and purified thoroughly.

11. O son of the Prophet’s family, a prayer is lost
In which you are not mentioned.

12. God coupled your noble name with His exalted name,
Increasing magnificence and prominence.

13. So it is a necklace on the chests of greetings,
And a crown whose takbeer has shone.

14. O my supporter when the darkness of the grave has settled
And I address Munkar and Nakeer.

15. O my shelter if I fear a frowning day,
Gloomy, difficult, pouring rain.

16. O my savior while the fire is kindled against the people
And it throws its sparks to fly away.

17. O my guide to the path when fear
Stuns my sight confusing me.

18. I am safe from my misdeeds
By my loyalty when my book is unfurled.

19. In you is a secret without which God would not
Apportion Hell and Heaven to people.

20. You have guided us to the path so we will be
Either grateful believers or disbelieving ingrates.

21. Peace be upon you, O closest of people
To those coming as witnesses and warners.
