1. Leave lamenting behind the howdahs of departure,
And ask your heart about every bygone.
١. دَعِ النَّوْحَ خَلْفَ حُدوجِ الرَّكائِبْ
وَسَلِّ فُؤادَكَ عَنْ كُلِّ ذاهِبْ
2. With the white swords, red lances,
In the yellow shawls and black coats.
٢. بِبِيضِ السَّوالِفِ حُمْرِ المَراشِ
فِ صُفْرِ التَّرائِبِ سُودِ الذَّوائِبْ
3. Life is naught but when you string
With the mouth of the beloved, love knots.
٣. فَما الْعَيْشُ إلاّ إِذْا ما نَظَمْتَ
بِثَغْرِ الحَبابِ ثَنايا الحَبائِبْ
4. I caution you against standing at the sand dunes
Where echo repeats its responsive cries,
٤. أُحاشيكَ مِن وَقْفَةٍ بِالطُّلولِ
تَبُلُّ الصَّدى بِصَداها الْمُجاوِبْ
5. Imposing speech on deaf rocks,
For in the madness of love are many wonders.
٥. تُكَلَّفُ صُمَّ الحِجارِ الكَلامَ
وَكَمْ فِي جُنونِ الهَوى مِن عَجائِبْ
6. Had you complained of sincere passion,
Vain wishes would not have given you false hopes.
٦. وَلَوْ كُنْتَ تَشْكو هَوىً صادِقاً
لَما عَلَّلَتْكَ الأَمانِي الكَوإِذْبْ
7. Look how cups of wine catch fire,
See water freeze and wine melt.
٧. تَأَمَّلْ حَريقَ كُؤُوسِ الرَّحيقِ
تَرَ الماءَ يَجْمُدُ وَالخَمْرَ ذائِبء
8. In the decanter is the dance of youth,
And when poured its separation is the graying of blossoms.
٨. لَها فِي الزُّجاجَةِ رَقْصُ الشَّبابِ
وَمَفْرِقُها أَشْمَطُ النَّبْتِ شائِبْ
9. It foams in anger when taken
Out of the cask, like the chaste veiled ones.
٩. وَتزْبِدُ غَيْظاً إِذْا أُبْرِزَتْ
مِنَ الدَّنَّ كالْمُحْصَناتِ الكَواعِب
10. As if gems on their heads
Were crowned in braids.
١٠. كَأَنَّ الحَبابَ عَلى رَأسِها
جَواهِرُ قَدْ كُلِّلَتْ فِي عَصائِبْ
11. The Magi rightly believed
Prostrating to fire is a duty.
١١. بِحُمْرَتِها صَحَّ عِنْدَ الْمَجوسِ
أَنَّ السُّجودَ إلى النَّارِ واجِبْ
12. We and our entertainer bear witness
To the marriage of the daughter of the vine to the son of clouds.
١٢. شَهِدْنا وَمُطْرِبُنا خاطِبٌ
زَواجَ ابْنَةِ الكَرْمِ بِابْنِ السَّحائِبْ
13. So from drops of spray, scattering,
And from the down of spring buds, ranks,
١٣. فَمِنْ قَطَراتِ الرَّذإِذْ النِّثارُ
وُمِن وَشْيِ زَهْرِ الرَّبِيعِ المراتِبْ
14. Gardens green as the blossoms of heaven,
And their flowers like the stars' bloom.
١٤. رِياضٌ كَخُضْرَةِ زَهْرِ السَّماءِ
وَأَزْهارُها مِثْلُ زُهْرِ الْكَواكِبْ
15. For the beasts are flocks in the valleys,
And for the birds in its skies a lineage chronicled.
١٥. وَلِلْوَحْشِ سِرْبٌ بِقيعانِها
وَلِلطَّيْرِ فِي جَوِّها سَطْرُ كاتِبْ
16. We went out to shoot in an arena
Of beautiful faces and delicate wrists.
١٦. بَرَزْنا إلى الرَّمْيِ فِي حَلْبَةٍ
حِسانِ الوُجوهِ خِفافِ المَضارِبْ
17. Their rifles in the eyes of the archers
Like their eyebrows under their bows' curvature.
١٧. بَنادِقُهُمْ فِي عُيونِ القِسِيِّ
كَأَحْداقِهِمْ تَحْتَ قِسْيِ الحَواجِبْ
18. One has a bird in the sky,
And the other a bird of the heart obligated.
١٨. فَتِلْكَ لَها طائِرٌ فِي السَّماء
وَهذِي لَها طائِرُ القَلْبِ واجِبْ
19. The meteors broke through,
Sparks amidst the clash of planets.
١٩. وَحَلَّتْ سَوابِقُ شُهْبٍ خَواطِفَ
حُجْنُ الْمَناسِرِ حُوُّ المَحالِبْ
20. They have claws like snakes'
And talons like scorpions' stings.
٢٠. بُزاةٌ لَها حَدَقُ الأَفْعُوانِ
وَأَظْفارُها كحُماتِ الْعَقارِبْ
21. So for the horizon a hawk takes down its prey,
While another bird flees death in escape.
٢١. فَلِلأُفَقِ نَسْرانِ ذا واقِعٌ
وَذا طائِرٌ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ هارِبْ
22. He unleashed a dog, vicious of breed,
Racing the zephyrs and tailwinds.
٢٢. وَأطْلَقَ كَلْباً لَهُ ضَارِياً
يُباري هُبُوبَ الصَّبا وَالجَنائِبْ
23. Four winds speed it,
Panting with nostrils flaring.
٢٣. تَطيرُ بِهِ أَرْبَعٌ كالرِّياحِ
وَيَفْتَرُّ عَنْ مُرْهَفاتٍ قَوَاضِبْ
24. In the night of its mantle, the radiance
Of a piercing star-beam ignites.
٢٤. وَتُضْرَمُ فِي لَيْلِ جِلْبابِهِ
شُعاعُ شِهابٍ مِنَ الْعَيْنِ ثاقِبْ
25. Back we returned, dragging joy's train,
Birds and beasts filling the baggage.
٢٥. وَعُدْنا نَجُرُّ ذُيولَ السُّرورِ
وَالطَّيْرُ وَالْوَحْشُ مِلءْ الحَقائِبْ
26. As the royal procession rejoiced
When Moses returned leading the caravan.
٢٦. كَما ابْتَهَجَتْ مِنْ سُرُورٍ خِلاطُ
وَقَدْ جاءَ مُوسى يَجُرُّ الْمَواكِبْ
27. A king, when he rides amidst the swords,
You see the moon amidst the planets' convergence.
٢٧. مَليكٌ إِذْا سارَ بَيْنَ السُّيوفِ
تَرَى الْبَدْرَ بَيْنَ اشْتِباكِ الْكَواكبْ
28. From under the procession, lions
With claws from their manes protrude.
٢٨. وَتَزْأَرُ مِنْ تَحْتِ ذاكَ الرِّكابِ
أُسُودٌ لَها مِنْ ظُباها مَخالِبْ
29. Such is the blossom of stars,
And the wing-span of time wraps all.
٢٩. فَتِلْكَ اللَّهإِذْمُ زُهْرُ النُّجومِ
وَمُعْتَكِرُ النَّقْعِ جِنْحُ الْغَياهِبْ
30. It appeared and the strongholds collapsed into dust
As pearls line up atop the shawls.
٣٠. بَدا فَهَوَتْ فِي التُّرابِ الثُّغورُ
كَما انْتَظَمَ الدُّرُّ فَوْقَ التَّرائِبْ
31. They summon him in various tongues
Like pilgrims beckoning from every side.
٣١. يُنادونَهْ بِاخْتِلاَفِ اللُّغاتِ
كَتَلْبِيَةِ الْحَجِّ مِنْ كُلِّ جانِب
32. They are frightened by the flash of iron blades
And tempted by the downpour of gifts.
٣٢. يُخيفُهُمُ بَأْسُ بَرْقِ الْحِديدِ
وَيُطْمِعُهُمْ سَحُّ سُحْبِ الْمَواهِبْ
33. The war beasts eye his banners
Patrolling and returning rapacious.
٣٣. تَؤُمُّ الْجَوارِحُ أَعْلامَهُ
تَروحُ بِطاناً وَتَغْدُو سَواغِبْ
34. As if their citadels are their lairs,
So many clans above those headbands!
٣٤. كأنَّ السَّناجِقَ أَوْكارُها
فَكَمْ عُصَبٍ فَوْقَ تِلْكَ الْعَصائِبْ
35. O king of the land, rightly towards you
Lead the directions of its east and west.
٣٥. أَيَا مَلِكَ الأرْضِ حَقّاً إِلَيْكَ
مَآلُ مَشارِقِها وَالمَغارِبْ
36. You will rule the land of Constantinople
That which the Romans cannot match.
٣٦. سَتَمْلِكُ أرضَ قُسَنْطينَةٍ
ومَا كانَ لِلرُّومِ مِنْها يُقارِبْ
37. It is as if I see its towers crumble
And the catapults' boulders pelt within.
٣٧. كَأَنِّي بِأبْراجِها قَدْ هَوَتْ
وَصَخْرِ الْمِجانِيقِ فِيها ضَوارِبْ
38. The siege-tower crept like a bride
Dragging towards it the battalions' trains.
٣٨. وَقَدْ زَحَفَ الْبُرْجُ زَحْفَ العَروسِ
إلَيْها يَجُرُّ ذُيولَ الكَتائِبْ
39. Its garb is naught but iron mesh
And its jewelry naught but the arrows' white.
٣٩. فَما لُبْسُهُ غَيْرَ نَسْجِ الْحديدِ
ومَا حَلْيُهُ غَيْرَ بِيضِ القواضِبْ
40. The cannons ignited with gunpowder filling,
And smoke billowed like the wings of gloom.
٤٠. وَأضْرِمَتِ النَّارُ حَشْوَ النُّقوبِ
وَثارَ الدُّخانُ كَجِنْحِ الغياهِبْ
41. But I do not divine the future,
For your party, by God, is victorious.
٤١. وَلَيْسَ الْكَهانَةُ مِنْ شِيمَتِي
وَلكِنَّ حِزْبَكَ بِاللَّهِ غالِبْ
42. God gives you supporters fighting
With scripture or battalions contending.
٤٢. لَكَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قائِلٍ قاتٍلٍ
يُجادِلُ بِالكُتْبِ أو بِالكَتائِبْ
43. For the court of justice on judgement day
Is no more rightful than the darkness of black nights.
٤٣. فَما مَجْلِسُ العَدْلِ يَوْمَ القَضاءِ
بِأَوْلَى بِهِ مِنْ سُرُوجِ السَّلاهِبْ
44. So stand, giving support to the weak,
Show them the wonders of generous bestowal.
٤٤. فَدُمْ سَنَداً لِلْعُفاةِ الكُفاةِ
تُريِهمْ غَرائِبَ بَذْلِ الرَّغائِبْ
