1. O moon that rises calmly
Swords gleam upon your eyelids
١. أَماناً أَيُّها الْقَمَرُ الْمُطِلُّ
عَلَى جَفْنَيْكَ أَسْيافٌ تُسَلُّ
2. Your beauty increases every day
While my body wastes away and withers
٢. يَزيدُ جَمالُ وَجْهِكَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ
وَلِي جَسَدٌ يَذُوبُ وَيَضْمَحِلُّ
3. Illness knows not the way to my body
But he whom I love points the way
٣. وَما عَرَفَ السَّقامُ طَريقَ جِسْمي
وَلكِنْ دَلُّ مَنْ أَهْوى يَدُلُّ
4. He averts his Turkish gaze from me
You speak true, narrowed eyes are stingy
٤. يَميلُ بِطَرْفِهِ التُّرْكِيِّ عَنِّي
صَدَقْتُمْ إِنَّ ضِيقَ الْعيْنِ بُخْلُ
5. When his tresses are let loose upon him
You'd see water cascading over him like shade
٥. إِذْا نُشِرَتْ ذَوائِبُهُ عَلَيْهِ
تَرى ماءً يَرِفُّ عَلَيْهِ ظِلُّ
6. And the morn of his cheek may guide some
Lost in the night of his hair, gone astray
٦. وَقَدْ يَهْدي صَباحُ الْخَدِّ قَوْماً
بِلَيْلِ الشَّعْرِ قَد تَاهُوا وَضَلُّوا
7. O king of hearts, you conquered them
But your conquest of subjects is not lawful
٧. أَيَا مَلِكَ الْقُلوبِ فَتَكْتَ فِيها
وَفَتْكُكَ فِي الرَّعِيَّةِ لا يَحِلُّ
8. A little union satisfies them, but if not
A downpour of you upon them they seek
٨. قَليلُ الْوَصْلِ يُقْنِعُها فَإِنْ لَمْ
يُصِبْها وابِلٌ مِنْهُ فَطَلُّ
9. Pass the wine cup to the regretful
For in your cheeks I find solace and sweetness
٩. أَدِرْ كأْسِ الْمُدامِ عَلى النَّدامَى
ففِي خَدَّيْكَ لي راحٌ وَنُقْلُ
10. My fires, without you, cannot be quenched
And my passions, without you, are not fulfilled
١٠. فَنيراني بِغَيْرِكَ لَيْسَ تُطْفا
وَأشْواقِي بِغَيْرِكَ لا تُبَلُّ
11. With your wondrous visage, you lead astray
While I have a king, by his reign, am led
١١. بِمَنْظَرِكَ الْبَدِيعِ تُدِلُّ تِيهاً
وَلِي مَلِكٌ بِدَوْلَتِهِ أُدْلُّ
12. Abu Al-Fath Al-Karim, refined Musa
A man who gives plenty and values little
١٢. أَبو الفَتْحِ الْكَريمُ الطَّلْقُ موسى
فَتىً يُعْطي الكَثيرَ وَيَسْتَقِلُّ
13. By him, the barrens of earth grew verdant
So what place is there, in any land, like his?
١٣. بِهِ اخْضَرَّتْ فِجاجُ الأرْضِ خِصْباً
فَما لِلْمَحْلِ فِي بَلَدٍ مَحَلُّ
14. On his throne, more precious than Solomon
And people of the world but ants to him
١٤. أَغَرُّ عَلى سَريرِ الْمُلْكِ مِنْهُ
سُلَيْمانٌ وَأَهْلُ الأرْضِ نَمْلُ
15. Others fill purse upon purse
While his era is bounty and justice
١٥. وَيَمْلأُ غَيْرُهُ كِيساً فَكيساً
وَمِلْءُ زَمانِهِ كَرَمٌ وَعَدْلُ
16. They said hoarding wealth is wisdom
He said: Yes, and some wisdom is ignorance
١٦. وَقَالُوا حِفْظُ هذا المالِ عَقْلٌ
فَقالَ نَعَمْ وَبَعْضُ الْعّقْلِ جَهْلُ
17. None criticizes him but destitute mounts
That flock to his doors from trails and roads
١٧. فَلَيْسَ يَذُمُّهُ إِلاَّ مَطايَا
إِلى أَبْوابِهِ تَنْضى وَسُبْلُ
18. He rules lands both vast and confined
And whatever contends with it, abased
١٨. تُمَلِّكُهُ الْبِلادَ قَناً وَجُرْدٌ
وَبُتْرٌ مَنْ يُطاوِلُها يَذِلُّ
19. When his armies march forth, expanding
Grief and plains are straitened before them
١٩. إِذْا انْبَثَّتْ عَساكِرُهُ اتِّساعاً
تَضايَقَ دونَها حَزْنٌ وَسَهْلُ
20. Their lightning blinds the eye of the sun
And their dust is kohl to the eye of the sun
٢٠. بَوارِقُها لِعَيْنِ الشَّمْسِ داءٌ
وَعِثْيَرُها لِعَيْنِ الشَّمْسِ كُحْلُ
21. For our master the Caliph he is resolute
Steel that wavers not, nor ever falters
٢١. لِمَوْلانا الْخَليفَةِ فِيهِ رَأْيٌ
حَديدٌ لا يَفِيلُ وَلا يُفَلُّ
22. He contemplated archery, and from him, an arrow
True, that strays not, nor does it slip
٢٢. تَأَمَّلَ فِي الْكِنانَةْ مِنْهُ سَهْماً
سَديداً لا يَطيشُ وَلا يَزِلُّ
23. He opened it, and corresponded with it intimately
And narrated the tale, such is his merit
٢٣. فَفَتَّاهُ وَراسَلَهُ اخْتِصاصاً
وَرَوَّاهُ الْحَديثَ وَذاكَ فَضْلُ
24. So this bounty increased, and endured
For he is most deserving of good
٢٤. فَزادَتْ هَذِهِ النُّعْمى وَدامَتْ
عَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّهُ لِلْخَيْرِ أَهْلُ
