1. The garden amid the crowned and shaded trees,
The land between the embroidered and folded drapes.
١. الرَّوْضُ بَيْنَ مُتَوَّجٍ وَمُشَنَّفِ
وَالأرْضُ بَيْنَ مُدبَّجٍ وَمُفَوَّفِ
2. The branch - the doves sang to it, so it swayed
Happily, and the clouds greeted it with thunder.
٢. وَالْغُصْنُ غَنَّاهُ الْحَمامُ فَهَزَّهُ
طَرَباً وَحَيَّاهُ الغَمامُ بِقَرْقَفِ
3. The shade swims in the pond as if it were
Rust flashing on a polished sword.
٣. وَالظِّلُّ يَسْبَحُ فِي الغَديرِ كَأنَّهُ
صَدَأٌ يَلُوحُ عَلى حُسامٍ مُرْهَفِ
4. Compare the ground to the sky and you will know
With flowers' stars it is the best ornament.
٤. قِسْ بِالسَّماءِ الأرْضَ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّها
بِكَواكِبِ الأزْهارِ أَحْسَنُ زُخْرُفِ
5. The narcissi's cheeks next to the poppies' cheeks
Are amazed by their beauty, unblinking.
٥. أحْداقُ نَرْجِسِها بِخَدِّ شَقِيقِها
مَبْهوتَةُ لِجمَالِهِ لَمْ تُطْرَفِ
6. The shadow in the chamomile flower is like
Darkness flickering in the folds of a curtain.
٦. وَالطَّلُّ فِي زَهْرِ الأقَاحِ كَأَنَّهُ
ظَلْمٌ تَرَقْرَقَ فِي ثَنايا مَرْشَفِ
7. Time passed and passed like our cup of wine
And the pouring of our singer, so gentle.
٧. راقَ الزَّمانُ وَراقَ كَأْسُ مُدامنا
وَرُضابُ ساقينا الأَغَنِّ الأَهْيَفِ
8. So I mixed that with this and drank it,
And kissed it and drew it close gently.
٨. فَمَزْجتُ ذاكَ بِهذِهِ وَشَرِبْتُها
وَلَثَمْتُهُ وَضمَمْتُهُ بِتَعَطُّفِ
9. And I plucked from its gardens, when it was shy,
Roses unpicked, on beds unslept.
٩. وَجَنَيْتُ مِنْ وَجَناتِهِ لَمَّا اسْتَحى
وَرْداً بِغَيْر مَراشِفي لَمْ يُقْطَفِ
10. And it glanced at me, so it was as if
It gave sickness to one enfeebled by sickness.
١٠. وَرَنا إلَيَّ بِطَرْفِهِ فَكَأنَّما
أَهْدَى السَّقامَ لُمِدْنَفٍ مِن مُدْنَفِ
11. We spent the night, and embraces covered our bodies
In the garb of generosity and chastity,
١١. بِتْنا وَقَد لَفَّ الْعِناقُ جُسومَنا
فِي بُرْدَتَيْنِ تَكَرُّمٍ وَتَعَفُّفِ
12. Until the dawn appeared like an unfurled flag,
Its banners the hems of the noblest king.
١٢. حَتَّى بَدا فَلَقُ الصَّباحِ كَجَحْفَلٍ
راياتُهُ رَنْكُ الْمَليكِ الأَشْرَفِ
13. A king whose right hand's whiteness belongs to Moses,
And his wondrous visage belongs to Joseph.
١٣. مَلِكٌ بَياضُ يَمينِهِ لِسَمِيِّهِ
مُوسى وَمَنْظَرُهُ البَديعُ لِيوسُفِ
14. Eyes are dazzled by his apparent self,
And minds follow, awed by his secret miracle.
١٤. تَشْتامُ ظاهِرَهُ العُيُونُ وَتَقْتَدي
مِنْهُ العُقولُ بِسِرِّ مُعْجِزَةٍ خِفِِي
15. Contradictory descriptions - a towering grandeur
Fixed by his firmness, and a branch of gentleness.
١٥. مُتَناقِضُ الأوصَافِ طَوْدُ مَهابَةٍ
رَسَختْ رَكانَتُهُ وَغُصْنُ تَعَطُّفِ
16. And he shows you, in his principles and gifts,
The style of an eloquent poem, a pouring of bounty.
١٦. وَيُريكَ مِنْ آرائِهِ وَعَطائِهِ
تَحْريرُ نِحْريرٍ وَبَذْلَ مُجَزِّفِ
17. To the backs of oppressors, the darkest darkness,
To the throne of kingship, the fairest justice.
١٧. وَعَلَى مُتونِ الْجُرْدِ أَظْلَمُ ظالِمٍ
وَعَلَى سَريرِ الْمُلْكِ أَنْصَفُ مُنْصِفِ
18. So the ember of his sword is a blaze for the transgressor,
And the wine of his temper a gift for the reverent.
١٨. فَحَريقُ جَمْرَةِ سَيْفِهِ لِلْمُعْتَدي
وَرَحيقُ خَمْرَةِ سَيْبِهِ لِلْمُعْتَفِي
19. O moon, you claim to match his face -
Yet on your brow is the burden of pretentiousness!
١٩. يا بَدْرُ تَزْعُمُ أَنْ تُقاسَ بِوَجْهِهِ
وَعَلَى جَبيِنكَ كُلْفَةُ المُتَكَلِّفِ
20. O cloud, you hope to equal his palm -
No! You are one who fails to keep his promise.
٢٠. يا غَيْمُ تَطْمَعُ أَنْ تَكونَ كَكَفِّهِ
كَلاَّ وَأَنْتَ مِنَ الْجَهامِ المُخْلِفِ
21. The kings of the pagans folded to his peace,
And he responded, following the Book's text.
٢١. جَنَحَتْ مُلُوكُ المُشْرِكينَ لِسَلْمِهِ
فَأجابَ مُتَّبِعاً لِنَصِّ الْمُصْحَفِ
22. And that one disdains their knights and cavalry,
Despite the swaying of their feathered lances.
٢٢. وَيَعِزُّ ذاكَ عَلَى ظُباهُ وَخَيْلِهِ
وَبِرَغْمِ آنافِ الرِّماحِ الرُّعَّفِ
23. A delay by the Able One, till a day whose fire
Will never die without their blood being spilt.
٢٣. إِمْهالُ مُقْتَدِرٍ لِيَوْمٍ نارُهُ
أَبَداً بِغَيْرِ دِمائِهِمْ لا تَنْطَفِي
24. The lions of his darkness roared, and their steps strode
In the confinement of that narrow pass.
٢٤. زَأَرَتْ أُسُودُ كُماتِهِ وَتَفَسَّحَتْ
خُطواتُهُمْ فِي ضيقِ ذاكَ الْمَوْقِفِ
25. It was as if his steeds became walls, protecting
Every honoured wall from alarm.
٢٥. فَكَأنَّني بِجِيادِهِ قَد أَصْبَحَتْ
سُوراً لمِعْصَمِ كُلِّ سُورٍ مُشْرِفِ
26. It was as if their homes were changed, the call to prayer
Replacing the clamour rising from their roofs.
٢٦. وَكَأَنَّني بِدِيارِهِمْ قَدْ بُدِّلَتْ
صَوْتَ المُؤّذِّنِ مِن خُوارِ الأسْقُفِ
27. It was as if their captives were in my hands -
Luxurious white ones and purest white ones.
٢٧. وَكَأَنَّني بِسِبائِهِمْ وَيَدي عَلَى
بَيْضاءَ مُتْرَفَةٍ وَأَبْيَضَ مُتْرَفِ
28. It was as if I saw you rise over them
Like the sun in its unmatched brilliance.
٢٨. وَكَأَنَّني بِكَ قَدْ طَلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمُ
كَالشَّمْسِ فِي الشَّرَفِ الّذي لَمْ يُكْسَفِ
29. If there is a Mahdi, then you are the one
Who revived the Prophet's faith and the Prophet.
٢٩. إِنْ كانَ مَهْديٌّ فَأنتَ هُوَ الّذي
أَحْيَيْتَ دينَ المُصْطَفى وَالمُصْطَفي
