1. Be my watcher, waiting for you to be seen
For your tears have already flowed enough
١. صُنْ ناظِراً مُتَرَقِّباً لَكَ أَنْ تُرى
فَلَقَدْ كَفى مِنْ دَمْعِهِ ما قدْ جَرى
2. O you who told the tale of Joseph's beauty
Alas, if only you could be bought like Joseph
٢. يا مَنْ حَكى فِي الحُسْنِ صُورَةَ يوسُفٌ
آهٍ لَوَ أَنَّكَ مِثْلَ يُوسُفَ تُشْتَرى
3. The eyes feast on his cheek, so he turns them away
And says, "This is not the fire of the villages."
٣. تَعْشُو العُيونُ لِخَدِّهِ فَيَرُدُّها
وَيَقولُ لَيْسَتْ هذهِ نارَ القِرَى
4. O killer of beauty, for it
Has remained accompanying a miserly tyrant
٤. يا قاتَلَ اللَّهُ الجمالَ فَإنهُ
ما زالَ يَصْحَبُ باخِلاً مُتَجَبِّرا
5. O branch of a lofty date palm in polished sands
You have excelled by bearing a shining full moon
٥. يا غُصْنَ بانٍ فِي نَقا رَمْلٍ لَقَدْ
أَبْدَعَتْ إِذْ أَثْمَرْتَ بَدْراً نَيِّرَا
6. Your phantom wouldn't harm me if I were in its place
For we are equal in sickness, neither seen
٦. ما ضَرَّ طَيْفَكَ لَو أكونُ مَكانَهُ
فَقَدِ اشْتَبَهْنا فِي السَّقامِ فَما نُرى
7. Will there be a return of my days with your union
Even if only in some fanciful dreams
٧. أتُرى لأَيَّامي بِوَصْلِكَ عَودَةٌ
وَلَوْ أَنَّها فِي بَعْضِ أَحلامِ الكَرَى
8. Once I drank the pure draft of your company
And reaped the verdant fruits of your pleasure
٨. زَمَناً شَرِبْتُ زَلالَ وَصْلِكَ صافِياً
وَجَنَيْتُ رَوْضَ رِضاكَ أَخْضَرَ مُثْمِرا
9. My hands grasped it, but when I opened them
I found nothing but sorrow and contemplation
٩. مَلَكَتْكَ فِيهِ يَدِي فَحينَ فَتَحْتُها
لَمْ أَلْقَ إلاَّ حَسْرَةً وَتَفَكُّرَا
10. I have an eye that, since its full moon set from it
Grazes his dwellings, hoping it will see him
١٠. لِي مُقْلَةٌ مُذْ غَابَ عَنْها بَدْرُها
تَرْعى مَنازِلَهُ عَساها أنْ تُرَى
11. Were it not for the outpouring of its tears and blood
I would not be famed among lovers
١١. لَوْلا انْسِكابُ دُموعِها وَدِمائِها
ما كُنْتُ بَيْنَ الْعاشِقِينَ مُشَهَّرا
12. It is as if it were Moses' palm, whenever
It casts pearls or red sandalwood
١٢. فَكَأنَّما هِيَ كَفُّ موسى كُلَّما
نَثَرَ اللُّجَيْنَ أَوِ النُّضارَ الأحْمَرا
13. I beg forgiveness of God Almighty because
I compared the little with the much
١٣. أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظيمَ لأِنَّني
شَبَّهْتُ بِالنَّزْرِ الْقّليلِ الأكْثَرَا
14. A king whose sword blazed and blood flowed
Yet I marveled that fires erupt oceans
١٤. مَلِكٌ تَوَقَّدَ سَيفُهُ وَجَرى دماً
فَعَجِبْتُ لِلنِّيرانِ تَطْفَحُ أَبْحُرا
15. A dark-skinned warrior with the spear's blow
And a ruddy white with the sword's blade
١٥. كَلِفٌ بِقَدِّ الرُّمْحِ أَهْيَفَ أَسْمِرا
وَبِحَدِّ نَصْلِ السَّيْفِ أَبْيَضَ أَحْمَرَا
16. Of a people whose early ones were felled by it
Like the creation of Adam by the latter prophet
١٦. مِنْ مَعْشَرٍ فَخَرَتْ أَوائِلُهُمْ بِهِ
كَفَخارِ آدَمَ بِالنَّبيِّ مُؤَخَّرَا
17. Ears turn away from praising others
When most of it is fabricated tales
١٧. تَنْبُو الْمَسامِعُ عَنْ مَديحِ سِواهُمُ
إِذْ كانَ أَكْثَرُهُ حَديثاَ يُفْتَرَى
18. White hands, red fingertips, black kohl
Adorn a cheek with verdant color
١٨. بيضُ الأيادي حُمْرُ أطْرافِ القَنا
سودُ العَجاجِ تَحِلُّ رَبْعاً أخْضَرَا
19. People are guided to villages by its smoke
And beasts are fed wherever it knots a braid
١٩. الإِنْسُ تُهْدَى لِلْقِرى بِدُخانِهِ
وَالْوَحْشُ تَشْبِعُ حَيْثُ يَعْقِدُ عِثْيَرَا
20. When it loved, it filled homes with bounty
And when it raged, it filled the plain with armies
٢٠. فَإِذْا حَبا مَلأَ الْمَنازِلَ نِعْمَةً
وَإِذْا سَطا مَلأَ الْبَسِيطَةَ عَسْكَرَا
21. It forbade the valiant, by the clashing of spears
From its soil, and watered it with red rain
٢١. مَنَعَ الْغَوادي بِاشْتِباكِ رِماحِهِ
عَنْ تُرْبِهِ وَسَقاهُ غَيْثاً أحْمَرا
22. Thus it produced hands and skulls
And spears that smashed the ribs of men
٢٢. فَلِذاكَ أثْمَر أَيدِياً وَجَماجِماً
وَقَناً بِلَبَّاتِ الرِّجال مُكسَّرَا
23. Alert, keeping safe the heart, though
It forgets its virtues when it is repeated
٢٣. يَقْظٌ حفِيظُ القَلْبِ إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ
يَنْسَى مَكارمَهُ إِذْا ما كَرَّرَا
24. Smooth in conversation, as if
Plying ears with wine or sugar
٢٤. مَعْسُولُ أَطْرافِ الْحَديثِ كَأَنَّما
يَسْقي الْمَسامِعَ مُسْكِراً أوْ سُكَّرَا
25. Truly, I swear, if its words took form
The gazelles' throats would ache from its jewels
٢٥. إَنّي لأُقْسِمُ لَوْ تَجَسَّدَ لَفْظُهُ
أَنِفَتْ نُحُورُ الْغانِيَاتِ الْجَوْهَرَا
26. If in ancient times it addressed people
No messenger would be sent to mankind
٢٦. لَوْ كانَ فِي الزَّمَنِ القَديمِ مُخاطِباً
لِلنَّاسِ لَمْ يُبْعَثْ رَسُولٌ لِلْوَرى
27. Its proof is the infidels by their Lord
Whom your grace will never cover
٢٧. وَدَلِيلُهُ الْكُرْجُ الَّذينَ بِرَبِّهِمْ
كَفَرُوا وَفَضْلُكَ بيْنَهُمْ لَنْ يَكْفَرا
28. They performed pilgrimage to your palace like their sacred dome
And saw you in it like the Messiah depicted
٢٨. حَجُّوا لِقَصْرِكَ مِثْلَ قُبَّةِ قُدْسِهِمْ
وَرَأوْكَ فِيها كالْمَسِيحِ مُصَوَّرا
29. There the supreme king, his face dust-covered
Resembling dirt more than fragrant musk
٢٩. فَهُنالِكَ الْمَلِكُ الْعَظيمُ مُعَفِّرٌ
وَجْهاً يَخالُ التُّرْبَ مِسْكاً أَذْفرَا
30. The lights of awe veiled you from them
Thus their eyes see you but do not see
٣٠. حَجَبَتْكَ أَنْوارُ الْمَهابَةِ عَنْهُمُ
فَلِذاكَ أَعْيُنُهُمْ تَراكَ وَلا تَرَى
31. How many gazers you guided on our fast night
Confused in the sky's expanse
٣١. كَمْ ناظِرٍ أَرْشَدْتَ لَيْلَةَ صَوْمِنا
قَدْ كانَ فِي جَوِّ السَّماءِ مُحَيَّرَا
32. O gazers upon a crescent moon, preventing
Sustenance, the full moon is free with its villages
٣٢. يا ناظِرينَ إلى هِلالٍ مانِعٍ
لِلزَّادِ موسى الْبَدْرُ مَبْذُولُ الْقِرى
33. Ramadan, a guest who went about completely
Until he saw you submitting, and rejoiced
٣٣. رَمَضان ضَيْفٌ سارَ حَوْلاً كامِلاً
حَتَّى رَآكَ مُسَلّماً فَاسْتَبْشَرَا
34. He came to you cheerful with your righteousness and piety
And left thanking you for what you granted him
٣٤. وَافاكَ مُبْتَهِجاً بِبِرِّكَ وَالتُّقى
وَمَضى لِمَا أوْلَيْتَهُ مُتَشَكِّرا
35. Celebrate a feast, you who truly fasted, prayed, and broke fast
O best of those who prayed, fasted, and broke fast
٣٥. فَتَهَنَّ عيداً أَنْتَ حَقّاً عِيدُهُ
يا خَيْرَ مَن صَلَّى وَصامَ وَأفْطَرَا
