1. How wonderful it is, O God,
A cheek clad in lilies,
١. تَعالى اللَّهُ ما أَحَسْن
شَقيقاً حُفَّ بِالسَّوْسَنْ
2. Whose kiss would cure all ailments,
If only it were possible.
٢. خُدودٌ لَثْمُها يُبْرِي
مِنَ الأَسقامِ لَوْ أَمْكنْ
3. But it cannot be plucked,
For its guard has locked it shut.
٣. فَما تُجْنى وَحارِسُها
بِقُفْلِ الصُّدْغِ قَد زَرْفَنْ
4. A slender gazelle with large eyes,
Who captures hearts with a glance.
٤. غَزالٌ ضَيِّقُ الأجْفا
نِ يَسبِي الرَّشَأَ الأَعْيَنْ
5. He has a tender heart, so gentle,
Yet, how hard and soft at once!
٥. لَهُ قَلْبٌ وَأَعْطافٌ
فَما أَقْسى وَما أَلْيَنْ
6. Never before have I seen
A small gem so precious.
٦. وَلَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَ مَبْسِمِهِ
صَغيرَ الجَوهَرِ المُثْمِنْ
7. I am smitten by his beauty,
Who would not love such a moon?
٧. فُتِنْتُ بِحُسْنِ صُورَتِهِ
وَمَنْ يَهْوَ الدُّمى يُفْتَنْ
8. A noble Joseph, so handsome,
Who was neither sold nor jailed.
٨. عَزيزٌ يُوسُفِيُّ الحُسْ
نِ لَمْ يُشْرَ وَلَمْ يُسْجَنْ
9. For him my eyes turned white,
While the abandoned can only mourn.
٩. قَدِ ابْيَضَّتْ بِهِ عَيْنِي
وَلِلمَهْجورِ أَنْ يَحْزَن
10. I profess my love in secret,
Fearing the spies of night.
١٠. أَبُثُّ هَواهُ مِن خَوْفٍ
لِنَجْمِ اللَّيْلِ لَمَّا جَنّْ
11. Concealing it is futile,
Since my tears have told all.
١١. وَما يَنْفَعُ كِتْمانِي
وَدَمْعُ العَيْنِ قَدْ أَعْلَنْ
12. In my heart I sheltered him,
But he left, burning my home.
١٢. وَكَمْ أَسْكَنْتُهُ قَلْبي
فَسارَ وَأَحْرَقَ الْمَسْكَنْ
13. After the pain of his absence,
I find solace praising the Shah of Armenia.
١٣. فَأُنْسِي بَعْدَ وَحْشَتِهِ
بِنَظْمِ مَديحِ شَاهَ ارْمَنْ
14. Brave warrior who buries foes
In the fray, corpses strewn.
١٤. كَريمٌ باسلٌ قَتْلا
هُ فِي نَقْعِ الوَغى تُدْفَنْ
15. How many raids against riches and enemies
Has he carried out!
١٥. عَلى الأمْوالِ وَالأَعْدا
ءِ كَمْ مِنْ غَارَةٍ قَدْ شَنّْ
16. No coat of mail or armor
Can save those who face him.
١٦. فَما يَنْفَعُ مَنْ يَلقا
هُ دِرْعٌ لا وَلا جَوْشَنْ
17. His steeds slim during peace
But fattened in battle by war spoils.
١٧. رَصينُ الجَأْشِ لَمَّا جا
شَ بَحْرُ خَمِسِيهِ الأَرْعَنْ
18. To those who ask, he is generous,
Guaranteeing gifts from his clouds.
١٨. عِجافٌ خَيلُهُ وَالوَحْ
شُ يَوْمَ نِزَالِهِ تَسْمَنْ
19. He does not trouble us
With harm or blame.
١٩. لَهُ بِشْرٌ لِسائِلِهِ
كَفِيلٌ بِالنَّدى يَضْمَنْ
20. So he gives wealth freely,
While guarding his honor zealously.
٢٠. وَمَنٌّ لا يُكَدِّرُهُ
عَليْنا بِالأذَى وَالمَنّْ
21. You own the land, O Moses,
Though it is as nothing to you.
٢١. فَذاكَ المَالُ مَبْذولٌ
وَذَاكَ العِرْضُ ما أَصْوَنْ
22. Send your army conquering,
Every city now Medina.
٢٢. مَلَكْتَ الأَرضَ يا مُوسى
وَعِنْدَكَ قَدْرُها أَهْوَنْ
23. With goodness you’ve filled the land,
While others merely fill coffers.
٢٣. فَأَوْرِدْ خَيْلَكَ الدُّنْيا
فَكُلُّ مَدينَةٍ مَدْيَنْ
24. He has a divine light
Adorning his beauty.
٢٤. مَلأتَ الأَرْضَ إِحْساناً
وَغَيرُكَ يَمْلأُ المَخْزَنْ
25. His generosity uplifts the lowly,
His might crushes the wicked.
٢٥. لَهُ نُوْرٌ إِلَهيٌّ
لِرَوْنَقِ حُسْنِهِ زَيِّنْ
26. This loosens tongues,
And that stills them.
٢٦. وَجَودٌ يَجْبُرُ العافِي
وَبَأْسٌ لِلْعِدى أَوْهَنْ
27. His prayers established,
The call to generosity, arise!
٢٧. فَهذا يُنْطِقُ الأَلْكَنْ
وَهذا يُخْرِسُ الأَلْسُنْ
28. If the historian knew
How he exaggerated what he wrote,
٢٨. صَلاةُ صِلاتِهِ قَامَتْ
وَحَيَّ عَلى النَّدى أَذَّنْ
29. O my master, enmity has ceased
And innocence reigns.
٢٩. فَلَوُ عَلِمَ المُؤَرِّخُ ما
تَغالى فِي الَّذي دَوَّنْ
30. Yours is the bounty, and your Lord
Does not waste the reward of one who is virtuous.
٣٠. أَيا مَوْلايَ زالَ البَأْ
سُ وَالبُرْءُ قَدِ اسْتَمْكَنْ
٣١. لَكَ الحَسْنى وَرَبُّكَ لا
يُضَيِّعُ أَجْرَ مَنْ أَحْسَنْ
