وأغيد ميال القوام مهفهف
With swaying gait and supple form
قسمت نظامي بين ظبي مهفهف
My poem divided my system between a fluttering gazelle
نفراتها عن لامح تنفي الكرى
Her glances banish care for a moment
امولاي قد أوليتني منك نعمة
My Lord, You have bestowed on me a blessing
ألا فاستمع يا نجل يحيى مقالتي
Listen, oh Yahya's son, to my words
خليدة ذاب القلب من حر شوقكم
My heart is melting from the heat of longing for you
عنطنطة غنجاء غرثاء بضة
An'antana, a cooing dove, a chirping sparrow
أجابه مذ دعا بتر ومران
Butr and Murran answered his call,
نفرت جفالا خيفة أن تتطيرا
She fled in fear, lest we be seen,
لحا الله كافا رددته حمامة
The mercy of God is sufficient, cooed a dove
لقد هجرتني أم سعد وحبها
The mother of Sa'd has forsaken me, and her love
عليوة إن الدمع أفشى وخبرا
O Uliwah, tears have been poured out and informed
منازل للأحباب غبر طوامس
The dwellings of loved ones are but dust and ruins,
ونشوانة غيداء ظامية الحشا
A slender, gazelle-like beauty with darkly alluring eyes,
أجارتنا إن العواذل في الهوى
The passionate have burdened me, for in love
أمولاي جد لي من يمينك حلة
My Lord, grant me from your right hand a robe
ناحت عليوة بالبكى من حين ما
She wept for me with tears since when
أتزعم يا جاري وسؤلي ومنيتي
Do you claim, O my neighbor, my hope and my wish
مررنا بروض والركائب وقف
We passed by a garden, and the riders halted,
اعلوة جاء عذالي مرامهم
My lofty disposition has come, their abuse is in vain
أتعز على الكريم النون
Does the noble youth grieve for the crescent moon,
برق تبدى خفية بسناء
A lightning flashed covertly in the darkness
أبا سيدي ما زلت بالدهر باقيا
Oh my master, you are still eternal in this life
لقد لذ لي الظبي الأغن عتابه
The graceful gazelle's reproach delighted me,
أمالئة الحجلين ذبت بحبكم
My yearning for your affection consumed me,
بنى نجل سلطان سعيد بعزمه
The son of Sultan Sa'id built with determination
وظبي من الأتراك تارك مهجتي
A gazelle from the Turks leaving my innermost being
ونشوانة الأعطاف غرثاء بضة
With the flexing of her slender waist she sways
ألا كل ليل زار فيه خليل
Alas, each night when the beloved came visiting
طيور المعالي في السماء حوائم
The birds of glory circle high in the sky,
أهل خبر فيه النجيد لنا يروى
News in which Nujayd is mentioned is narrated to us
بريق حثيث بالسويخف لامع
A brilliant flash from his sword gleaming,
ناد عليه الندى والخير منبسط
He calls to whom the dew and goodness spread
حوادث الدهر فيها البجر والعبر
The vicissitudes of fate contain lessons and exemplars
إن الليالي والأيام أطراق
The nights and days are treacherous,
يا حادي الركب هل مغلنطف جادا
O guide of the caravan, has Maghnatif become desolate
سعيد بن سلطان بنى العز والعلا
Sa'eed bin Sultan built glory and sublime
مسلم للراجين يمناه جنة
A paradise promised to the hopeful,
وطول حياتي لا أرى البين مخلصا
My life is long, yet never do I see
لحا الله ورقا هيجتني بشجوها
God has blessed a leaf that stirred me with its yearning,
سر قاصدا سرعا يا حادي النجب
Journey with haste, O guide of the stars,
زار الحبيب وللواشين أبراق
The beloved came though spies were watching,
سألتك يا مولاي من عظم حاجتي
I asked you, my Master, out of my great need
وافى كتابكم كالبدر لؤلؤة
Your book came like a pearl moon
ألا يا عبيد الله يا نجل راشد
O servants of God, O noble sons of Rashid
علي حلال ثغره وعذاره
His mouth and reproach are halal upon me,
فمن مقلتي روحي جرت عبراتها
My tears flow from my eyelids
ومعسول سعىنحوي
Toward me came one with lips sweet as honey
بمسجد الباغ حوض فيه ميزاب
In the garden mosque there is a pool
فلي كبد ما انفك عنها غليلها
My heart is burdened, and its sorrows never cease,
أجارِيتي دمعي سقى محملي جرياً
My tears flowed down my cheeks rapidly
من لي باحوى من الآرام منتخب
Who will lend me the most eloquent words
ولي طفلة غرثى الوشاحين قدها
I have a little girl with braided hair, her neck
وقائلة من طوق الخلق جوده
She who adorned people's necks with his generosity like a necklace,
وشمطاء بالخز الثمين تلفعت
With fine brocade she is arrogantly dressed,
لقد لذ لي هذا الكتاب وشرحه
This book and its commentary have delighted me
لقد رشت أهل الأرض يا أيها البحر
O sea, you have sprinkled the people of earth
أبا خالد ظني لتحفظ غيبتي
Abu Khaled, I thought you would keep my absence secret
حصاني لا في الصافنات التي مضت
My horse, unmatched in ages past
خليلي هل أشجاكما منزل قفر
نفراتها عن لامح
بأعراف رعد نحل سبحان مريم
وميالة العطفين غرثانة الحشى
بليت بحب قد تمكن في الحشى
يا حادي العيس قف بالجزع والعلم
ما بال قلبك لا ينفك من سقم
سحابك يا مولاي يسكب دائما
هذا كتاب شريف رائق حسن
هذا الحمى فانزلوا طرا بحومته
نادت عليوة وهي واقفة على
يواصلني ساجي اللواحظ أهيف
ألا فانشدوا ذكر النجيد وحدثوا
وافاكم النصر بالتوفيق موصولا
أجيران وادي الأثل هل منكم وصل
أرى قلمي فوق الصحائف يعبث
بريق بدا بالغرب والاين يشكتي
لقد تقاربن أشباح وأشباح
ألا أبلغا عني أبا المجد والعلا
سألت المعالي والقنا والمهندا
نفرت غزالا خشية أن تبصرا
أهدي سلاما بعد النخل والشجر
تغيرت الأوقات وانقبض الدهر
يقولون لي أن الفراق مكره
ظلمتك مذ شبهت عودك بالقنا
محل بمسيال النجيد دريس
ومقرطق جاء يسعى
حشا في حشائي الهم والشوق ما حشا
وادعج وضاح الجبين يزورني
أشاقك رسم أم أشاقك مربع
لله من طفلة قلبي مساكنها
مها العرب لو أني بلي رباقه
سرى كنسيم الخافقين أتاني
يا سيدي فعلكم لا كان مجهولا
زجرت عذولا رام صدي بعذله
فها كبدي من محجري تسيل
فها مقلتي في السكب زاد عرامها
