- أثار الليث ألحاظ نيامDrowsy glances roused the lion;
- أجذوة تشعلIs it an ember being kindled,
- أخذوا موثق العذار على الخدThey bound the cheek with a pledge of down,
- إذا أنت لم تصبر على الذل في الهوىIf you do not endure humiliation in love,
- إذا كان نصر الله وقفا عليكمIf God's aid is reserved exclusively for you,
- إذا كنت تجفوني وأنت ذخيرتيIf you shun me, though you are my treasure,
- أذوت سموم النوى ريحانة الأملSeparation's scorching wind has withered the basil of hope;
- أرسل اللحظ للقتال نذيراHe sent his glance into battle as a herald;
- أرقت لبرق بالحمى يتألقI lay sleepless at lightning glittering over the sanctuary.
- أسعد الوجد بدمع وكفاAid longing with tears that stream.
- أسيف الوزارة بوركت منO sword of the ministry, blessed are you as
- أشمس في غلالة أرجوانIs it a sun within a veil of purple?
- أضاع وقاري من علقت جمالهHe whose beauty I fell in love with has undone my dignity.
- أعلامه السود إعلام بسؤددهHis black banners proclaim his eminence,
- أقول وقد طال السهاد بذكرهI say, as sleeplessness has dragged on through remembrance of him,
- الأرض قد لبست رداء أخضراThe earth has donned a robe of green,
- الجنة والجحيم في وجنتهParadise and Hell lie in his cheek,
- إليكم يحن القلب في كل ساعةToward you my heart yearns at every hour,
- أما ترى دمه في الطشت حين جرىDo you not see his blood in the basin as it flowed—
- أما لك في أمري إلى العدل مصرفHave you no recourse to justice in my case?
- أمن بشير إلى مضناك بالفرجIs there a bearer of glad tidings of relief for the one you have worn down?
- أموسى لقد أوردتني شر موردO Musa, you have indeed led me to the worst watering place.
- أمولاي الذي آوي به فيMy refuge in whom I take shelter from
- إن الدقيق ولعقهIndeed, flour and licking it
- انظر إلى لون الأصيل كأنهLook at the hue of late afternoon: it seems
- أهدت نجاتك عوذة المتخوفYour deliverance bestowed its recompense upon the fearful,
- أهدى نسيم الصباحThe morning breeze bestowed
- بأبي جفون معذبي وجفونيMy father be ransom for my tormentor's eyelids and mine,
- بأبي من هد جسمي القوىMy father be ransom for him who shattered my body's strength,
- باكر إلى اللذة والإصطباحGo early to pleasure and the morning draught,
- باكر إلى شادن وكاسGo at dawn to a young gazelle and a cup,
- باكيات الغمامThe weeping clouds,
- تبسم عن لما در نظيمHe smiled, revealing strung pearls between dusky lips;
- تثقلت عن كبدي والحشاYou were too heavy for my liver and innards,
- تجلى شهاب للسعادة آفلA fading meteor of good fortune shone forth,
- ترى يا زمان الوصل هل أنت راجعI wonder, O time of union, will you return?
- تسليت عن موسى بحب محمدI consoled myself for Musa with love for Muhammad.
- تفاحة منك أهدت صحن خدك ليAn apple from you gifted me the fair expanse of your cheek,
- تنازعني الآمال كهلا ويافعاHopes contend for me, in middle age and youth,
- تنقاد لي الأوتار وهي عصيةThe strings yield to me, though they are unruly;
- جاهدت في تمهيد حمص راحلاYou strove to bring order to Hims while departing
- جرى من جفوني ما أذاب أجفانيFrom my eyelids flowed what melted my eyelids,
- جعل المهيمن حب أحمد شيمةThe Guardian made love for Ahmad a noble trait,
- حث الكؤوس ولا تطع من لاماPass the cups around, and obey no one who blames.
- حديث عنقاء صب أدرك الأملاA lovesick man who attains his hope is a tale of the phoenix.
- حوى الحب خمسا بهجة نكهة لماThe beloved holds five: beauty, fragrant breath, dusky lips,
- خذ من حديث شؤونه وشجونهTake from the tale of his concerns and sorrows
- خذها عقارين من لحظ وكاسTake it as two intoxicants, from a glance and a cup,
- خذها فصبغ الظلام قد نصلاTake it, for darkness’s dye has faded away;
- خضعت وأمرك الأمر المطاعI have submitted, and your command is the command obeyed.

- خليلي قم لقد صفت العقارMy friend, rise—the wine has cleared.
- دع العتب رأسا فأنت الرئيسLeave reproach altogether—for you are the chief;

- زهر الآمالHope's blossoms,
- سار بصبري وباحتماليHe bore away my patience and endurance
- سألتها علة من ماء مبسمهاI asked her for a second draught of water from her smiling mouth,
- سألزم نفسي عنك ذنب غراميI shall lay the blame for my passion on myself, not you.
- سآلفها إلف العتيق كتابهI shall cherish her as a freed slave cherishes his writ of freedom,
- سقى الهوى فانتشى العميدLove poured the drink, and the lovesick man grew drunk.
- سل الكأس تزهو بين صبغ وإشراقAsk the cup, gleaming between dawn and sunrise:
- سل النوم يا موسى وهنئت طيبهAsk sleep, O Musa—and may you enjoy its sweetness—
- سل عن سهادي وعن سقمي وعن جلديAsk about my sleeplessness, my illness, and my endurance,
- شادن لو جرى معA young gazelle—if he raced with the
- شفق وشته خضرة في حمرةThe afterglow and its scattering greenness in redness
- صرح بما عندي ولو ملأ الفضاSpeak plainly of what I feel, even if it fills the expanse.
- صعقت وقد ناجيت موسى بخاطريI was struck senseless as I communed with Musa in my thoughts.
- ضمان على عينيك أني عانYour eyes must answer for my captivity;
- طاول بجدك فالأقدار عنوانVie in greatness through your good fortune, for destinies are its sign.
- طائر القلب طار عن وكريThe bird of my heart flew from my nest,
- طلع البدر جانب الكرخThe full moon rose beside al-Karkh,
- طليق دموعي في الغرام مسلسلMy unfettered tears are chained in passion;
- طمحت بأجفاني فأنسيتها الغمضاYou lifted my eyelids and made them forget sleep,
- طيف ألم شفق ألمA phantom visited; twilight descended.
- ظبي من العرب سبا مهجتيA gazelle from among the Arabs has captured my soul,
- ظلما خصمت شهيد الحب عن دمهUnjustly, you denied love’s martyr redress for his blood;
- عبثت بقلب عميده لحظاتهHis glances toyed with the heart of his love-stricken lover.
- علقت ببدر لامني فييه عاذلI fell in love with a full moon; a faultfinder reproached me for loving him.
- عليل شاقه نفس عليلAn ailing man, stirred to longing by a languid breath—
- عميد أصيب عن عمدA love-stricken man, struck deliberately,
- عندي يد غراء أهدتها السرىNight travel bestowed on me a radiant boon,
- عين الظباء تجنيهاThe gazelles' eye—its cruelty
- فاح زهر الروض فاشتاق الهزارThe garden's blossoms breathed fragrance, so the nightingale yearned,
- فدونك من مدحي أزاهر روضةSo take from my praise the blossoms of a garden,
- فديتك جنب مطمع الحين من فتىI ransom you, keep the young man's greed away
- فؤاد الصب إياكاO lover's heart, beware,
- فوق سهامك إن الله يهديهاAim your arrows high, for God guides their flight,
- في ملاح لك شتىAmong your varied beauties,
- قبولك ريعان الشباب فلا ولىYour favor is the bloom of youth—may it never depart!
- قد كتب الحسن على خدهBeauty has indeed written upon his cheek:
- قضت خمر الثغورThe wine of the frontiers has legislated
- قل لمن أسهر بالعين الجفونTell the one whose gaze has kept eyelids sleepless:
- قلب المعنى من خيالك مأ خلاThe lovesick one's heart has never been without your image.
- قلبي بداء الهوى والحب قد تلفاMy heart has perished from the sickness of passion and love.
- قمر السما يبليي الثياب وأنت ياThe moon of heaven wears out garments; but you, O
- كان محياك له بهجةYour face once had a radiance,
- كل قاص يدنو إلي كأنيEvery distant thing draws near to me, as though
- كم أعيا بحرب أعزلHow I struggle in an unequal war,
- كيف أصغي للعاذلينHow can I heed the two reprovers,
- كيف ترى زورة الخليج وقدWhat do you think of a visit to the inlet, now that
- لا تركنن مع الذنوب لعزةNever rely on might while committing sins.
- لا تطلبوا ثأري فلا حق ليDo not seek vengeance for me, for I have no claim
- لام العذار لتوكيد الهوى خلقتWas the lām of the sideburn created to affirm love,
- لحاظه قد أرسلاHis glances have let fly,
- لزهرة البستان في غصنهاThe garden's flower, upon its bough,
- لست أنسى الأحباب ما دمت حياI shall not forget the beloved as long as I live.
- لقد أعقبت بالبؤس منك وبالنعمىIndeed, it has brought misery from you, and blessing,
- لك العذر إن لم أعد زورةYours is the excuse if I do not visit again,
- لله سر جمال أنت موضعهGod has a secret of beauty; you are its abode.
- لله نهر ما رأيت جمالهGod has a river whose beauty whenever I saw
- لولا قضاؤك بين الحكم والحكمHad you not judged between rule and rule,
- لي صاحب ترك النساء تظرفاI have a friend who forsook women—a show of refinement
- ليل الهوى يقظانThe night of passion is sleepless,
- ما عاب ساحر طرفه رمد بهInflammation in his eye has not marred the magic of his gaze;
- محا قدومك عنا الرعب والعدماYour arrival erased from us fear and poverty,
- مضى الوصل إلا منية تبعث الأسىUnion has passed, save for a wish that stirs sorrow,
- من منصفي وأميري خصميWho will grant me justice, when my prince is my adversary?
- مه لائمي عن ملاميStop reproaching me, my reproacher.
- موسى ترفق ولا تضعنيMusa, be gentle, and do not squander me.
- نعيمي في الحب أن تشقىMy bliss in love is that it should make suffer—
- نفسي فدى موسى وإن لم تبق ليMy soul be Musa's ransom, though his glances have left me
- نهر كأن الشمس تملأ قلبهA river, as though the sun were filling its heart,
- هذا أوان فضيحتي لبيك ياThis is the hour of my disgrace; I answer your call, O
- هل الأسى واقيه فليس ليIs sorrow a shield? For I have no
- هل درى ظبي الحمى أن قد حمىDoes the gazelle of the sanctuary know that he has kindled
- هل يلحى في حمل ما يلقىDoes the blame borne ever fade
- هو الفتح حقا ما على الشمس كاتمIt is victory indeed; no veil can cover the sun.
- وافى وفي جيده عقد من الدررHe arrived with a necklace of pearls upon his neck.
- والنجم في خد الحبيب إذا هوىBy the star on the beloved's cheek when it falls,
- وداع قلب أزفاA heart's farewell has drawn near,
- وزاهرة المرأى معطرة الشذاAnd a woman radiant to behold, fragrant in scent,
- وزير والينا الرضى أفلحThe minister of our governor al-Rida is cleft-lipped;
- وشى بسري في موسى وأعلنهMy secret about Musa was betrayed and revealed
- وفظ غليظ القلب لا ود عندهAnd a harsh, hard-hearted man has no affection in him.
- وقف الهوى لي حيث أنت فليس ليLove has come to a halt for me where you are, so I have
- ولازورد باهر نورهAnd lapis lazuli, whose radiance dazzles,
- ولما تبرج خضر البطاحAnd when the verdure of the lowlands unveiled itself,
- ومعطل والحسن يعشق جيدهAnd an unadorned youth—Beauty loves his neck,
- ومكرر سحر اللواحظ أهيفAnd the charm of the subtle lover repeats
- وناضرة لها مني صفاتAnd a fresh beauty has some traits of mine,
- ووردي خد نرجسي لواحظAnd one with a rosy cheek and narcissus-like eyes—
- ويأتي من الهجران زلة مدنفAnd from estrangement comes a lovesick man's lapse.
- يا سمي المصطفى يا بغيتيO namesake of the Chosen One, O my desire,
- يا لائمي إن مت فيه اتئدO you who blame me, if I die for him, do not be hasty;
- يا لحظات للفتنO glances! Temptation has
- يا محسنا حسنا قد صال منظرهO handsome benefactor, whose appearance has triumphed
- يا مرهبي دون سلطان يصول بهO you who terrify me without power to assail me,
- يا ناصحا رام أن يقيني كلاO adviser who sought to protect me—no!
- يا واحدا في الفضل حالفني ندىO peerless in excellence, I have been befriended by the bounty
- ياجامع الشمل بعدما افترقاO you who reunite the company after it has parted,
- ياحسنه والحسن بعض صفاتهOh, his beauty! And beauty is but one of his qualities.
- ياسالب القلب مني عندما رمقالمO you who stole my heart from me when you glanced!
- يأوي إلى حسب مثل السها شرفاHe finds shelter in ancestral honor as lofty as Suha,
- يجد الردى فينا ونحن نهازلهDeath is in earnest with us, while we jest with it.
- يخف بشرا إذا انهلت أناملهHe grows light with joy when his fingertips pour forth,
- يقولون لو قبلته لاشتفى الجوىThey say, “If you kissed him, love’s anguish would be healed.”
- يلحى الزمان وما عليه ملامTime is blamed, though no blame rests upon it.
