I say, as sleeplessness has dragged on through remembrance of him,

and the eagle of the bright stars has readied itself for flight,

and the fiercely striking lightning has flickered as though it were

    a brave man's sword or a coward's heart.

It rends the night's mourning garb with its own palm,

dyed, or its armor with a spearpoint.

He gestured toward me in greeting, and both lodged

the lightning's radiance in a loving heart, captive to him.

His cheek appeared before my eye, which answered it

with tears that flowed from my eye and soothed me.

So I spent the night slain by my longings, and only

my tears were my bedfellow, overflowing crimson-red.

As though the starry blossoms around me were mourning assemblies,

the raven of darkness among them proclaimed my death.

    فَإن لاح مِن قُربٍ فَكَيف تَرانِي

    I fell prostrate at their memory, despite the distance;

so if he appears nearby, how would you see me then?
