My friend, rise—the wine has cleared.

And the nightingale has sung in the grove.

How long this lingering in hopes?

    Awake! Life is only borrowed.

And take it from the hands of a guileless gazelle,

Whose eyelids are languid and downcast.

A gazelle with lions in his glances,

And in his cheeks are water and fire.

When night envelops the drinking companions,

Daylight smiles forth from his front teeth.

The reproacher tells me, 'Forget him.'

And what excuse have I, now that down has sprouted on his cheeks?

So be patient with separation after closeness.

For were it not for wine, the hangover would not be praised.
