فَقَضىso he died أَسىًof grief قَبلَbefore اِقتِضاءcollecting دُيونِهِhis debts
A lovesick man: beauty's might decreed his abasement;
The youth's beauty has faded with time's passage,
so he died of grief before collecting his debts.
Bringing sorrow before debts are due.
وَأَغَرَّand a radiant one تَتلوrecites الفَجرَthe Dawn غُرَّتُهُhis luminous brow كَماjust as
تَتلوrecites لِقَلبيto my heart فاطِراًFāṭir (the Originator) بِجُفونِهِwith his eyelids
And a radiant one whose brow recites 'The Dawn,' just as
Dawn's cheek blushed as it followed night,
his eyelids recite Fāṭir to my heart.
Just as my heart flushed when gazed on by his eyes.
هُوَhe لِلغَرابَةِfor rarity فيin الجَمالِbeauty عَرابَةٌʿArāba
أَخَذَtook up المَحاسِنَthe charms رايَةًas a banner بِيَمينِهِin his right hand
In wondrous beauty he is ʿArāba;
In beauty he surpassed all with gracefulness,
he took up beauty's charms as a banner in his right hand.
Grasping perfection's banner in his right hand.
حَلَّيتُI adorned شِعريmy verse مِنfrom بَديعِthe wondrousness of صِفاتِهِhis qualities
بِطَلاوَةٍwith sweetness تُغنيهِmakes it independent عَنof تَلحينِهِits setting to music
I adorned my verse, drawing on his wondrous qualities,
I adorned my poetry with his noble qualities,
with sweetness that spares it being set to music.
Sweetening it beyond any need for melody.
فيon خَدِّthe cheek of موسىMūsā نَقطُthe dot of خالٍa mole رائِقٍlovely
نَورُthe bloom of العِذارِcheek-down مُحَلَّأٌkept away مِنfrom نونِهِhis nūn
On Mūsā's cheek is the dot of a lovely mole;
On Moses' cheek, a charming beauty-mark
the bloom of cheek-down is kept away from his nūn.
Illuminates his bashfulness with its glow.
فَتَرىso you see صَحيفَةَthe page of كاتِبٍa scribe مُتَماجِنٍmischievous
قَدalready خَطَّpenned قَبلَbefore النونِthe nūn نُقطَةَthe dot of نونِهِhis nūn
So you see a mischievous scribe's page,
You'd think a scribe's negligent pen
who penned his nūn's dot before the nūn itself.
Dotted a nun before the one in "nun".
يَجريflows بِفيِهِin his mouth كَوثَرٌKawthar (a paradisal river) فيamid جَوهَرٍjewels
أَرخَصتُI held cheap جَوهَرَthe jewels of أَدمُعيmy tears لِثَمينِهِfor his precious jewels
In his mouth a Kawthar flows amid jewels;
His mouth pours forth pure wine,
I held the jewels of my tears cheap for his precious jewels.
I paid my tears, pearls beyond price for it.
آهاًAh! لِلُؤلُؤِfor the pearls of ثَغرِهِhis mouth هَلcan يَشتَفيfind healing
مَكنونُthe hidden part of ذاكَthat الشَوقِlonging مِنfrom مَكنونِهِhis hidden pearls
Ah, for the pearls of his mouth! Can healing come
Ah, if only his lips' pearls might quench
to that hidden longing from his hidden pearls?
The yearning hidden away in their treasure!
إِنif رُمتُI seek مِنهُfrom him الوَصلَunion فِعلاًas an act حاضِراًpresent-tense
أَومَتsignaled لِلاِستِئنافِtoward the future سينُthe letter sīn of جَبينِهِhis brow
If I seek union with him as a present-tense act,
If I'm denied his company while living,
the sīn of his brow signals the future.
My longing for reunion will dot his forehead.
