جَرىflowed مِنfrom جُفُونِيmy eyelids مَاwhat أذابmelted أجفَانِيmy eyelids
وشَبَّتand blazed بِأحشَائيwithin my entrails لَواعِجُsearing flames نِيرانِيmy fires
From my eyelids flowed what melted my eyelids,
Tears flowed from my eyelids melting them,
And the searing flames of my fires blazed within my entrails,
And sorrows blazed in my heart like fires.
عَلَىat فَقدthe loss خِلّa dear friend كَانwas رُوحِيmy soul وراحَتِيand my comfort
وروحِيand my soul وريحَانِيand my sweet basil ونَاظِرand the eye إنسَانِيof my being
At the loss of a dear friend who was my soul and my comfort,
For the loss of a dear one who was my spirit, my comfort,
And my soul, my sweet basil, and the eye of my being.
My spirit, my delight, and the one who gazed at me.
حَبِيبa beloved مَضىdeparted صَبرِيmy patience عَلَيهِover him وكَيفand how ليfor me
بِصبرٍwith patience عَلَىover ذاكthat الحَبِيبِthe beloved وسُلوانِand consolation
A beloved over whom my patience is gone—and how could I
My beloved is gone, how can I have patience
Have patience over that beloved and find consolation?
With patience for that beloved who brought me joy.
كَأنَّas though دُمُوعtears العَينِof the eye مِنِّيfrom me لَفَقدِهِfor his loss
عَلَىthroughout أمَدthe span الأيَّامِof days تَجرِيflow بِطُوفَانِin a deluge
It is as though the tears of my eye, at his loss,
It's as if the tears of my eyes for his loss
Flow in a deluge throughout the span of days.
Flow for ages in a deluge.
فَمَاand not دفَنُواthey buried عُثمَانUthman حَتَّىuntil لِدفنِهِمat their burying him
دفَنتُI buried مَسَرَّاتِيmy joys وَأحيَيتُand I revived أحزانِيmy sorrows
They had scarcely buried Uthman when, at that burial,
No sooner had they buried Uthman, than for his burial
I buried my joys and brought my sorrows to life.
I buried my joys and revived my sorrows.
فَإنso if غَيَّبُواthey hid فِيin التُّربِthe dust عَادِلwell-proportioned قَدّهhis stature
فَقَدthen indeed غَيَّبُواthey hid بَدراًa full moon وغُصناًand a branch منof البَانِthe ban tree
So if they have hidden his well-proportioned figure in the dust,
If they have hidden in the earth the just one his height,
They have indeed hidden a full moon and a branch of the ban tree.
Then they have hidden a full moon and a branch in bloom.
لَقَدindeed مَاتhe died فِيin بَحرٍa sea تَعَاظَمgrew immense مَوجُهُits waves
فَمتُّso I died بِهbecause of him فِيin بَحرِa sea دمعِيmy tears وأشحَانِيand my sorrows
Indeed, he died in a sea whose waves grew immense;
He died in a sea with towering waves,
So I died because of him in a sea of my tears and sorrows.
So I died in the sea of my tears and laments.
هُوhe الدُّرُّthe pearl غَارgrew jealous الدَّهرُTime عَنهُof him فَردَّهُso it returned him
لِمَعدنِهِto his source إذsince مَالَهُhe has no عِندهُwith it ثَانِequal
He is the pearl; Time grew jealous of him and returned him
He is the pearl, time has hidden him, so it sent him back
To his source, since it had no other like him.
To his place of origin, having no equal there.
عَلَيهِover him اصطِبَارِيmy patience واقِعٌfallen بَعدafter فَقدِهِhis loss
وكَمand how many لِعَلِيّfor Ali وَقعَةa battle بَعدafter عُثمَانِUthman
My patience lies fallen over him after his loss,
After his loss, my patience has befallen me,
And how many battles Ali had after Uthman!
And how many tribulations befell Ali after Uthman.
عَلَيهِupon him مِنfrom المَولَىthe Lord سَحَائِبُclouds رحمَةٍof mercy
تَرُوحُgo in the evening وتَغدُوand go in the morning كُلَّevery يَومٍday بِهَتَّانِwith steady rain
May clouds of mercy from the Lord be upon him,
Upon him are clouds of mercy from the Master,
Passing at evening and morning each day with steady rain.
Coming and going every day constantly.
