لاno شَكَّdoubt لَونُthe hue of مُوَدِّعٍone bidding farewell لِفِراقِat parting
Look at the hue of late afternoon: it seems
beyond doubt, the hue of one bidding farewell at parting.
وَالشَمسُand the sun مِنfrom شَفَقِthe twilight glow of المَغيبِsunset كَأَنَّهاas though it

And the sun, in sunset's twilight glow, seems
to have scratched a cheek in apprehension.
لاقَتit met بِحُمرَتِهاwith its redness الخَليجَthe gulf فَأَلَّفاand so the two combined
خَجَلَthe blush of الصِباyouth وَمَدامِعَand the tears of العُشّاقِlovers
It met the gulf with its redness, and together they combined
the blush of youth and the tears of lovers.

كَالكَأسِlike the cup خَرَّتthat fell مِنfrom أَنامِلِthe fingertips of ساقِa cupbearer
It fell, at the hour of its setting, flushed red,
like a cup that fell from a cupbearer's fingertips.
