أَبا حَسَنٍ لا حَسَّنَ اللَهُ حالَةً

أَبا حَسَنٍ لا حَسَّنَ اللَهُ حالَةً

تُحَوِّجُ أَربابَ الشَبابِ إِلى العُذرِ

تُحَوِّجُ أَربابَ الشَبابِ إِلى العُذرِ

O Abu Hasan, may God never improve a state

Abu Hassan, may Allah not improve a state

That makes young men resort to excuses,

That causes the youth to make excuses

وَلا مَن يُنادي نَحوَ نَهرٍ وَدَوحَةٍ

وَلا مَن يُنادي نَحوَ نَهرٍ وَدَوحَةٍ

وَوَجهِ أَخي حُسنٍ يُقابَلُ بِالبَدرِ

وَوَجهِ أَخي حُسنٍ يُقابَلُ بِالبَدرِ

Nor one who calls toward a river and a spreading tree,

Nor one who calls towards a valley and oasis

And the face of one endowed with beauty, compared with the full moon.

And the face of my brother Husn that equals the full moon

فَلا تَترُك الأَشغالَ طُرّاً وَتَرتَقي

فَلا تَترُك الأَشغالَ طُرّاً وَتَرتَقي

إِلى أُفُقِ اللَذاتِ جَهراً بِلا سِرِّ

إِلى أُفُقِ اللَذاتِ جَهراً بِلا سِرِّ

So do not abandon all the tasks and ascend

So do not leave your work hastily and climb

To the horizon of pleasures, openly, without secrecy.

To the horizon of pleasures openly without secret

أَعِد دَعوَةَ اللُقيا عَلى مَسمَعي الَّذي

أَعِد دَعوَةَ اللُقيا عَلى مَسمَعي الَّذي

يَلِذُّ بِما أَودَعتَهُ دائِمَ الدَهرِ

يَلِذُّ بِما أَودَعتَهُ دائِمَ الدَهرِ

Repeat the invitation to meet within my hearing, which

Prepare again the call to meet on my hearing that

Delights forever in what you have entrusted to it.

Always delights in what you have deposited, time everlasting

وَلا تَنسَ ذِكرَ الكاسِ فَهوَ كَمالُها

وَلا تَنسَ ذِكرَ الكاسِ فَهوَ كَمالُها

وَحَسِّن لَها الإِغفالَ مِن حِليَةِ الذِكرِ

وَحَسِّن لَها الإِغفالَ مِن حِليَةِ الذِكرِ

And do not forget to mention the cup, for that completes it;

And do not forget to mention the cup for it is its perfection

And beautify its neglected state with the ornament of remembrance.

And do it the favor of neglect from the adornment of mention

بِها حُلِّيَت حالي وَمالِيَ عيشَةٌ

بِها حُلِّيَت حالي وَمالِيَ عيشَةٌ

سِواها وَإِلّا فَالسَلامُ عَلى العُمرِ

سِواها وَإِلّا فَالسَلامُ عَلى العُمرِ

With it my state has been adorned, and I have no life

With it my state and livelihood were adorned

Apart from it; otherwise, farewell to life.

Nothing else, otherwise peace be upon life

فَوَاللَهِ ما في الأَرضِ مَجلِسُ راحَةٍ

فَوَاللَهِ ما في الأَرضِ مَجلِسُ راحَةٍ

بِغَيرِ حُلى الراحِ الَّتي سَلَبَت صَبري

بِغَيرِ حُلى الراحِ الَّتي سَلَبَت صَبري

For, by God, there is no restful gathering on earth

By Allah, there is no place of comfort on earth

Without the adornments of wine, which stole my patience.

Other than the adornment of comfort that robbed me of patience

سَآلَفُها إِلفَ العَتيقِ كِتابَهُ

سَآلَفُها إِلفَ العَتيقِ كِتابَهُ

وَلا أَشتَهي وَرداً سِواها لَدى الحَشرِ

وَلا أَشتَهي وَرداً سِواها لَدى الحَشرِ

I shall cherish it as a freedman cherishes his writ,

Its habitual use is the familiarity of the vintage in its book

And I desire no draught but it at the Gathering.

And I desire no roses other than it on the day of resurrection
