A lovesick man who attains his hope is a tale of the phoenix.

My share of beauty is that I am among those it has slain.

Truly, the reproachers gave good counsel—if only they had been heeded.

The sword of Musa’s glance outpaces reproach.

I sought a way to be cured of loving him,

so his glance spelled out diseases and ailments for me.

O you about whom, out of hope, all my speech has become

“Perhaps” and “if only,” and all my poetry has become love verse.

In waking life, you denied me a greeting in return, so I did not

dare demand kisses from your dream-phantom.

    لَو كانَ يُنضَحُ مِن ماءِ اللَمى نَصَلا

    The yellow dye of wasting sickness clothed my body;

had it been sprinkled with the water of dusky lips, it would have faded.

My longing for you—may you not be burdened with my longing—has

exhausted rhymes, and exhausted tears and stratagems.
