يُلحىis blamed الزَمانُTime وَماand no عَلَيهِupon it مَلامُblame
يَجنيcommits wrong القَضاFate وَتُعَنَّفُand are rebuked الأَيامُthe days
Time is blamed, though no blame rests upon it.
Time passes by with no blame upon it
Fate commits the wrong, yet the days are rebuked.
Fate reaps while days become violent
أَعياbaffled البَسالَةَvalor وَالحِذارَand caution حَبائِلٌsnares
سِيّانِboth alike فيهاin them الأُسدُthe lions وَالآرامُand the gazelles
Snares have baffled valor and caution;
Valour and caution are entangled in trials
within them, lions and gazelles are alike.
Wherein lions and docile beasts are equal
يوديbrings ruin الرَدىdeath بِمُسالِمٍupon a peaceable person وَمُحارِبٍand a warrior
يُقويbecomes deserted الكِناسُthe gazelle's covert وَتُقفِرُand grow desolate الآجامُthe thickets
Death brings ruin upon the peaceable and the warrior alike;
Fate destroys both peaceful and combative men
the covert is deserted, and the thickets grow desolate.
While fates grow stronger and moons fade away
قُلsay لِلمَنونِto Death لَئِنeven if عَظُمتِyou grew great خَطيئَةًin sin
فَلَقَدthen indeed أَصابَhit the mark سُدادُكِyour aim المُعتامُselective
Tell Death: though your sin is great,
Say to death that if my sin has grown
your selective aim has indeed struck its mark.
Then your righteousness has found the blind
أَنّىhow اِهتَدَيتِdid you find حَظِيَّةِthe favored lady of سُؤدَدِnobility
قَدindeed ضَلَّstrayed عَنهاfrom her الصُبحُthe dawn وَالإِظلامُand darkness
How did you find nobility's favored lady,
How did you find your worthy portion
whom dawn and darkness had failed to find?
When dawn and darkness both went astray?
مَحجوبَةُveiled الشَخصِthe person الكَريمِnoble وَفَضلُهاand her excellence
كَالفَجرِlike the dawn لاnot يُلقىis cast عَلَيهِupon it لِثامُa veil
Her noble person was veiled, yet her excellence
The virtuous soul was veiled from sight
was like the dawn, upon which no veil is cast.
Like dawn with no garment to block its way
لَوif رامَهاassailed her غَيرُanyone other than القَضاءِFate لَكانَthere would surely be فيamong

Had any but Fate assailed her, there would have been, among
Had another, not fate, desired that soul
the lions of battle, swelling rage and ferocity.
Then raging lions would thrash about in alarm
وَلَكانَand there would surely be فيin حَدَقِthe eyes of الرِماحِthe spears تَشاوُسٌfierce glaring

And the eyes of the spears would have glared fiercely,
Spear heads would whisper in consultation
and the tongues of slender white blades would have contended.
And the blades of swords engage in debate
هاbehold إِنَّهُindeed it is الرُزءُthe calamity الَّذيwhich ثَقُلَتgrew heavy بِهِbecause of it

نُوَبٌblows of fate وَخَفَّتand grew unsteady عِندَهُbefore it الأَحلامُsober minds
Behold, this is the calamity beneath which grew heavy
It is the sustenance that weighed down sins
the blows of fate, while sober minds lost their poise before it.
And belittled ambitions at its feet
هَيهاتِfar from it ماnot بَرقُthe lightning of الجَوانِحِthe inner ribs خُلَّبٌrainless

Far from it! The lightning in the breast is not rainless
Alas, the determination of souls did not waver toward it
in this grief, nor are the eyelids' rain clouds feeble.
Nor did the slumber of eyelids grow intense
أَمّاas for العَزاءُconsolation فَقَدthen indeed غَداhas become مُتَنَكِّراًunrecognizable
فَكَأَنَّماso it is as though حَسَناتُهُits good deeds آثامُsins
As for consolation, it has become unrecognizable,
Condolences have become a disguise
as though its good deeds were sins.
As if its virtues were but sins
ياO بَرَّةًvirtuous woman لَمّاwhen اِنطَوىwas folded away إِحسانُهاher beneficence

O virtuous woman! When her beneficence was folded away,
O Barra, when her kindness came to an end
the pages and pens yearned for it.
Pages and pens yearned for her
تَرضىwould gladly accept نُفوسٌsouls أَنto تَكونَbe لَكِfor you الفِداthe ransom
فَتَذودand so ward off harm عَنكِfrom you وَإِنَّهاand indeed they are لَكِرامُtruly noble
Souls would gladly be your ransom,
Willing souls offer themselves for sacrifice
and ward harm off you; indeed, they are noble.
To defend you, and they are so generous
لَوif أَنَّthat شَمسَthe sun of الأُفقِthe horizon دونَكِinstead of you أُدرِجَتwere shrouded

Had the sun of the horizon been shrouded in your stead,
If the sun were placed lower than you
glory's debt to you would still not have been discharged.
Glory’s right would not be fulfilled in you
أَوحَشتِyou made desolate شَهرَthe month of الصَومِfasting حَتّىuntil قَدindeed بَدَتappeared
لِلبَثِّfor anguish فيهِin it وَلِلأَسىand for sorrow أَعلامُbanners
You made the month of fasting desolate, until there appeared
You saddened the month of fasting until
within it banners of anguish and sorrow.
Signs of melancholy and grief appeared
فَعَلىso upon النَسيمِthe breeze مِنَfrom الكَلالِweariness كَآبَةٌgloom

So weariness casts gloom upon the breeze,
Upon the breeze, gloom weighs down
and pallor lays sickness upon the late afternoon.
And pallor from frailty spreads upon the gentle wind
سَيَسيرُwill depart هَذاthis الشَهرُmonth قَبلَbefore أَوانِهِits appointed time
إِذsince لَمnot يَسعهُaccommodate it لِماbecause of what صَنَعتِyou did مَقامُremaining
This month will depart before its appointed time,
This month will pass before its time
for what you have done leaves it no room to linger.
For your abode could not contain it
كَمhow often جُدتِyou gave generously بِالمَعروفِwith kindness وَهوَand it was مُتَمَّمٌmade complete

هِبَةًas a gift وَقُمتِand you stood in prayer اللَيلَthe night وَهوَand it was تَمامُentire
How often you lavished kindness, made complete
How much good you brought while it was complete
as a gift, and stood in prayer through the entire night.
A gift, standing through the night until dawn
مَنwho يُنجِدُwill aid الأُمّالَthe hopeful بَعدَكِafter you أَنجَدَتhave gone up to Najd

Who will aid the hopeful after you? To Najd have risen
After you aided the hopeful, who will help
their sighs, while their tears descend to Tihamah.
Their sighs and tears accusingly condemn
وَأَراكِand I see you نِمتِyou have fallen asleep عَنِaway from العُفاةِthe seekers of bounty وَطالَماand so often
عَدَتِassailed الخُطوبِcalamities فَسَهَّدَتكِand so kept you awake وَنامواwhile they slept
And I see you sleeping, unheeding the seekers of bounty, though so often
I saw you turn away from the heedless, though often
calamities struck, keeping you awake while they slept.
Hardships besieged you as they fell asleep
عاشَتlived بِكِthrough you العَلياءُhigh honor دَهراًfor an age فيin غِنىًplenty

فَاليَومَso today صَبَّحَvisited at dawn رَبعَهاits dwelling الإِعدامُdestitution
Through you, high honor lived long in plenty;
The lofty lived in wealth through you for an age
so today, destitution has visited its dwelling at dawn.
Today, oblivion dawned upon their quarters
وَاليَومَand today عادَwent back الدَهرُTime فيon إِحسانِهِits kindness
وَاِستَرجَعَتand reclaimed مَعروفَهاtheir bounty الأَيّامُthe days
And today Time has revoked its kindness,
Today, time returned in its favour
and the days have reclaimed their bounty.
And days reclaimed their kindness
ياO ديمَةًsteady gentle rain فيinto التُربِthe earth غارَتsank بَغتَةًsuddenly

O steady rain, suddenly sunk into the earth,
O Deema, you suddenly disappeared into dust
while those who hope stand parched with thirst.
While the hopeful stand confounded
صِرناwe have come to نَشيمُwe watch for لَهاfor her البَوارِقَthe lightning flashes فيin الثَرىthe soil

We have come to watch for her lightning flashes in the soil,
We stayed up late digging lightening into the earth for you
though lightning is watched for in the direction of the sky.
As lightening cracked the sky
كانَتshe was رَءوماtenderly loving بِالصَنيعِtoward beneficence تَرُبُّهُnurturing it

فَالمَكرُماتُso noble deeds لِفَقدِهاbecause of her loss أَيتامُorphans
She was tender toward beneficence, nurturing it;
You would nurture the meek with kindness
so noble deeds are orphaned by her loss.
Now the generous are orphaned by your loss
لَولاbut for ضَريحُكِyour tomb ماnot عَلِمناwould we have known حُفرَةًa hollow

But for your tomb, we would never have known a hollow
Were it not for your tomb, we would not have known
with which Shamam now vies in height.
A grave competing skyward with nobility

It did the grave no harm that they were neither musk nor
It did not harm her that no musk or
pearls—the pebbles and dust in which she lay.
Pearls set with beads settled upon her

The great took such a station in praising you
The great ones stood praising you
that feet surpassed their faces there.
Their faces touched the ground before you

Deeds of devotion preceded your steps into Paradise,
The paths to Heaven preceded your steps
upon which God and Islam bestowed praise.
As God and Islam spoke well of them

The houris cast their gazes toward you,
The wide-eyed houris reached out to you
and greeting and peace welcomed you.
With greetings and peace to welcome you

You were not laid in your grave of pure earth
The righteous earth did not lay you in your grave
without their standing ready in expectation.
Except that resurrection was waiting expectantly

When you departed, you left the best of sons behind, just as
When you left, you left behind the best son
spring remains when a cloud has poured its rain.
As spring remains when clouds depart

That peerless, valiant man—yet doubled
That unique hero - though ministries doubled -
in him is the badge of the vizierate, so it is twin.
Were but a symbol of partnership to him

The lofty ranks were ennobled by the house of Khalas,
Through the family of Salvation, high offices
for they are souls, and lofty stations are bodies.
Became spirits and the high offices were bodies

فَأَبوfor Abu عَليٍّAli كَوكَبٌa star وَحُسامُand a sharp sword
Tell the dark clouds or the wars: Break apart,
Say to darkness or war, shatter yourselves
for Abu Ali is a star and a sword.
For Abu Ali is a star and a sword
فَالخَطبُfor calamity لاnot يُعيِيoverwhelms مُروءَةَthe magnanimity of ماجِدٍa noble man

For calamity cannot overwhelm the magnanimity of a noble man
Difficulties do not tire the gallantry of Majid
whose two pillars are nabʿ wood, while calamities are thumam grass.
His pillar is a spring from which valours drink
لَوif تُطبَعُwere forged الأَسيافُthe swords مِنfrom عَزَماتِهِhis resolves

If swords were forged from his resolves,
If swords were made from his resolves
surrender would not save the sons of battle.
Surrender would not avail the sons of turmoil

His gifts come readily, but his tears
Submissive are his gifts, but his tears
in calamities are the hardest thing to obtain.
In calamities are the most dear to covet

When his words divided our souls
wounds of ours were healed by the dew of his hands!
How many were healed by the dew of his speech

Or if our eyes share his sleeplessness, they have never
Or when his justice parted our eyes
ceased to be cherished by his justice and to sleep.
They continued to be honoured and slept
لاmay not يُبكِهِmake him weep الدَهرُTime الخَؤونُthe treacherous بِحادِثٍthrough calamity

May treacherous Time not make him weep through calamity,
Time’s misfortunes do not make him weep
for Time laughs and smiles because of him.
For time smiles beautifully at him

Can the world frighten him by scattering what is ordered,
He is fearful resolve composed in verse
when his presence is its safety and order?
And his existence brings security and order
