حَوى الحِبُّ خَمساً بَهجَةً نُكهَةً لَماً

سَنَى نُورهُ قَالُوا اجتَمَعن بِهِ لِما

سَنَى نُورهُ قَالُوا اجتَمَعن بِهِ لِما

The beloved holds five: beauty, fragrant breath, dusky lips,

Love embodied five, delight, savor, moisture, dew,

Radiance, his light—they said, “Why have they gathered in him?”

Its light adorned, they said, unite with it for dew.

وقد حَاز خَمساً رِقَّةً ولَطَافَةً

وقد حَاز خَمساً رِقَّةً ولَطَافَةً

وحَسناً وإحسَاناً وثَغراً ومَبسَمَا

وحَسناً وإحسَاناً وثَغراً ومَبسَمَا

And he has gained five: tenderness and delicacy,

It obtained five, gentleness, delicacy,

And beauty, kindness, a mouth, and a smile.

حَوى خَدُّهُ خَمساً بَيَاضاً وحُمرةً

حَوى خَدُّهُ خَمساً بَيَاضاً وحُمرةً

وخَالاً ونَاراً يَا خَلِيلِي ثُمَّ مَا

وخَالاً ونَاراً يَا خَلِيلِي ثُمَّ مَا

His cheek holds five: whiteness and redness,

His cheek embodied five, whiteness, redness,

And a beauty mark and fire, my friend, then water.

A mole, fire - O my friend - then what?

حَوى لَحظُهُ خَمساً فُتُوراً وفِتنَةً

حَوى لَحظُهُ خَمساً فُتُوراً وفِتنَةً

وجِيداً وشَعراً ثُمَّ صدغاً مُنَمنَماً

وجِيداً وشَعراً ثُمَّ صدغاً مُنَمنَماً

His glance holds five: languor and enchantment,

His glance embodied five, langour, temptation,

And a neck and hair, then a finely adorned temple-lock.

Excellence, poetry, then a dimpled cheek.

وأعشَقُ خَمساً عُجبضهُ ودلالَهُ

وأعشَقُ خَمساً عُجبضهُ ودلالَهُ

وصوتاً حَلا والقَدَّ إذمَاس والفَمَا

وصوتاً حَلا والقَدَّ إذمَاس والفَمَا

And I adore five: his vanity and his coyness,

And I love five - his charm, coquetry,

And a sweet voice, his figure when it sways, and his mouth.

A sweet voice, the slenderness of his waist and mouth.

حَوى ثَغرهُ خَمساً سُلافاً وسُكَّراً

حَوى ثَغرهُ خَمساً سُلافاً وسُكَّراً

وشَهداً ومِسكاً ثُمَّ دُرَّا مُنَظَّمَا

وشَهداً ومِسكاً ثُمَّ دُرَّا مُنَظَّمَا

His mouth holds five: choice wine and sugar,

His lips embodied five, limpidity, sugar,

And honey and musk, then neatly strung pearls.

لَقَد حَاز خَمساً غُصن بَانٍ وروضةً

لَقَد حَاز خَمساً غُصن بَانٍ وروضةً

وشَمساً إذا لاحَت وبَدراً وأنجُمَا

Indeed, he has gained five: a bān-tree bough and a garden,

He obtained five, a supple branch, a meadow,

And a sun when it shines forth, a full moon, and stars.

وقَد حَاز خَمساً عِزَّةً وصِيَانَةً

وقَد حَاز خَمساً عِزَّةً وصِيَانَةً

ومُلكاً وحَظَّا وافِراً وتَحَكُّمَا

ومُلكاً وحَظَّا وافِراً وتَحَكُّمَا

And he has gained five: dignity and chastity,

He obtained five, pride, safekeeping,

And dominion, abundant good fortune, and mastery.

Kingdom, fortune in plenty, and mastery.

تَعَلَّم خَمساً قَسوة القَلبَِ والجَفَا

تَعَلَّم خَمساً قَسوة القَلبَِ والجَفَا

وسِحراً وصدَّا ثُمَّ مَال وأقسَمَا

وسِحراً وصدَّا ثُمَّ مَال وأقسَمَا

He learned five: hardness of heart and coldness,

He learned five, cruelty of heart and aloofness,

And magic and rejection; then he turned aside and swore.

Sorcery, rejection, then property and oaths.

وأورثَنِي خَمساً سُهَاداً وحَسرةً

وأورثَنِي خَمساً سُهَاداً وحَسرةً

ووجداً وسُقماً زائِداً وتَألُّمَا

ووجداً وسُقماً زائِداً وتَألُّمَا

And he bequeathed me five: sleeplessness and regret,

And he bequeathed me five, wakefulness, sorrow,

And longing, worsening illness, and suffering.

Passion, illness increasing, and suffering.

سَأطلُبُ خَمساً طَاعَةً مِنهُ والرّضا

سَأطلُبُ خَمساً طَاعَةً مِنهُ والرّضا

ووِدَّا وعَطفاً ثُمَّ وصلاً مُسَلَّمَا

ووِدَّا وعَطفاً ثُمَّ وصلاً مُسَلَّمَا

I shall seek five: obedience from him and approval,

I will seek five from him, obedience, consent,

And affection and tenderness, then union freely granted.

Love, kindness, then union in peace.

أخَالِفُ خَمساً فِيهِ أهلِي وأهلَهُ

أخَالِفُ خَمساً فِيهِ أهلِي وأهلَهُ

رَقِيباً وعُذَّالاً كَذِلِك لُوَّمَا

رَقِيباً وعُذَّالاً كَذِلِك لُوَّمَا

I defy five for his sake: my family and his family,

I oppose five, where I and his people

A watcher and reproachers, and likewise fault-finders.

Are censorious, blaming - and likewise blamed.
