وفَظّand a harsh man غَليظِhard القلبِof heart لاَno وِدَّaffection عندَهُin him
وفَظّ غَليظِ القلبِ لاَ وِدَّ عندَهُ
وَلَيسَand there is not لَدَيهِwith him للأخِلاَّءfor close friends تأنيسُwarmth
وَلَيسَ لَدَيهِ للأخِلاَّء تأنيسُ
And a harsh, hard-hearted man has no affection in him.
Hard-hearted and harsh, no affection does he possess
And he has no warmth for close friends.
Nor companion to comfort and console his loneliness
تَوَاضُعُهُhis humility كِبرٌarrogance وتقرِيبُهُand his drawing you close جدفاًblasphemy (reading uncertain)
تَوَاضُعُهُ كِبرٌ وتقرِيبُهُ جدفاً
وترحيبُهُand his welcome مقتٌloathing وَبُشرَاهُand his glad tidings تأيِيسُinstilling despair
وترحيبُهُ مقتٌ وَبُشرَاهُ تأيِيسُ
His humility is arrogance, and his drawing you close is blasphemy [word uncertain].
His humility is pride, his intimacy cold disdain
And his welcome is loathing, and his glad tidings bring despair.
His welcome bitter reproach, his greeting cause for pain
