الأَرضُthe earth قَدalready لَبِسَتhas donned رِداءًa robe أَخضَراgreen
وَالطَلُّand the dew يَنثُرُscatters فيon رُباهاits hills جَوهَراjewels
The earth has donned a robe of green,
The earth has donned a green robe,
And dew scatters jewels over her hills.
And dew scatters jewels upon its hills.
هاجَتit stirred فَخِلتُso I imagined الزَهرَthe blossoms كافوراًcamphor بِهاin it
وَحَسِبتُand I thought فيهاin it التُربَthe soil مِسكاًmusk أَذفَراstrongly fragrant
She stirred to life; I fancied the blossoms camphor upon her,
It stirred, and I took the blossoms there for camphor,
And thought her soil intensely fragrant musk.
And I took the soil there for richly fragrant musk.
وَكَأَنَّand as though سَوسَنَهاits irises يُصافِحُshakes hands with وَردَهاits roses
ثَغرٌa mouth يُقَبِّلُkisses مِنهُof it خَدّاًa cheek أَحمَراred
Her lilies seem to clasp hands with her roses—
And it is as though its irises, shaking hands with its roses,
A mouth kissing a crimson cheek.
Were a mouth kissing a red cheek of the rose.
وَالنَهرُand the river ماin the space بَينَbetween الرِياضِthe gardens تَخالُهُyou imagine it
سَيفاًa sword تَعَلَّقَhung فيin نِجادٍa baldric أَخضَراgreen
The river amid the gardens—you would imagine it
And the river between the gardens—you would fancy it
A sword suspended from a green baldric.
A sword hanging from a green baldric.
وَجَرَتand swept بِصَفحَتِهِacross its surface الصَباthe east wind فَحَسِبتُهاso I imagined it
كَفّاًa hand تُنَمِّقُwrites ornately فيon الصَحيفَةِthe page أَسطُراlines
The morning breeze swept across its surface, and I imagined it
And the east wind swept across its surface, so I fancied it
A hand embellishing lines upon a page.
A hand tracing ornate lines upon the page.
وَكَأَنَّهُand as though it were إِذwhen لاحَgleamed ناصِعُpure فِضَّةٍsilver

And when it gleamed, it seemed the purest silver,
And when it gleamed, it seemed like pure silver
Which the sun’s hand turned to yellow gold;
That the sun's hand had turned to yellow gold.
أَوor كَالخُدودِlike the cheeks بَدَتappeared لَناto us مُبيَضَّةًwhite
فَاِرتَدَّthen turned بِالخَجَلِwith bashfulness البَياضُthe whiteness مُعصفَراsafflower-dyed
Or like cheeks appearing pale before us,
Or like cheeks that appeared to us white,
Whose whiteness, blushing with shame, turned saffron-red.
Then bashfulness turned their whiteness safflower-red.
وَالطَيرُand the birds قَدalready قامَتstood عَلَيهِabove it خَطيبَةًas preachers
لَمdid not تَتَّخِذtake إِلّاexcept الأَراكَةَthe arak tree مِنبَراa pulpit
The birds stood over it, delivering a sermon,
And the birds stood above it as preachers,
Taking none but the arak tree as their pulpit.
Taking only the arak tree for a pulpit.
