    You lifted my eyelids and made them forget sleep,

    And made me pluck fresh love from your cheeks.

    Can my longing consent to forget a mouth

    Whose signet demands the breaking of patience’s seal?

    O Musa, O my part and my whole, in truth—

    And my words “the whole and the part” are no metaphor.

    فَكَيفَ جَمَعتَ الجَزمَ عِندِيَ وَالخَفضا

    You lowered my station when you cut off my means of approach;

    How, then, did you combine severance and abasement in me?

    I bound my fingertips to the rope of the sun that is you,

    Seeking my fortune, though fortune bites them off.
