أمَاdo you not تَرَىsee دَمَهُhis blood فيin الطَّشتِthe basin حِينَwhen جَرَىit flowed
سُلاَفَةَthe choicest portion الرَّاحِof wine فِيin كَأسٍa cup منَof الذَّهَبِgold
Do you not see his blood in the basin as it flowed—
Do you not see his blood in the goblet when it flowed,
the choicest wine in a cup of gold?
The draft of wine in a golden cup?
لَوif لَمnot تَكُنbe مِنfrom دَمِblood العُنقُودِthe grape cluster رِيقتُهُhis saliva
لَمَاwould not have اشتَكَىcomplained خَدُّهُhis cheek القَانِيcrimson منَof اللَّهَبِthe flame
Had his saliva not been from the grape-cluster's blood,
Had it not been from the juice of grapes, his drink,
his crimson cheek would not have complained of flame.
His cheek would not have complained of the flame.
تَبَّتmay perish يَدَاthe two hands عَاذِلِيَّmy reproachers فَوقَabove وَجنَتِهِhis cheek
حَمَّالَةِbearer of الوَردِroses لاَnot حَمَّالَةِbearer of الحَطَبِfirewood
May my reproachers' hands perish above his cheek,
May the hands of my reproacher be dust-covered over his cheek
the bearer of roses, not the bearer of firewood.
Bearing roses, not bearing firewood,
حَتَّىuntil إذَاwhen دَخَلَتentered فِيinto كُمِّهِhis sleeve يَدُهُhis hand
كَالشَّمسِlike the sun غَابَتvanished عنِfrom الأنظَارِsight فيwithin الحُجُبِthe veils
Until, when his hand entered his sleeve,
Until when his hand entered his shirt,
like the sun, it vanished from sight behind the veils.
It disappeared from sights like the sun in the clouds.

"Lower your wing, O Moses, to dispel fear."
"Lower your wing, O Moses, out of awe."
