The moon of heaven wears out garments; but you, O
The moon in the sky wears out clothes, while you,
moon of darkness—bodies waste away through you.
O moon of the night, wear out bodies.
إنif مَزَّقَتtore apart أثوابgarments صبرِيmy patience والحَشَاand the entrails
مِنكfrom you الجُفُونُthe eyelids فَإنَّهُنَّthen indeed they سِهَامُarrows
If the robes of my patience and my entrails are torn
If your glances tear my patience and composure,
by your eyelids, then indeed those eyelids are arrows.
Then they are arrows.

The heart grew sick from their sickness, and sometimes
My heart grows sickly due to their sickness, and perhaps
a sickness from the sick infects the healthy.
The healthy is made sick by the sick.
مَنwhoever رامsought وصلَكunion with you فَليَعُمso let him swim بَحرsea الرَّدىdeath

إنَّindeed الزُّبَيرal-Zubayr أتَىcame بِهِwith him العَوَّامُal-‘Awwam; also, the swimmer
Whoever seeks union with you, let him swim the sea of death.
Whoever desires to reach you must cross the sea of destruction,
Indeed, al-Zubayr was brought forth by al-‘Awwam.
For the masses have reached you, O Zubair!
