ياO مُنىthe wishes of نَفسيmy soul وَحَظّيand my fortune مِنfrom زَمانيmy lifetime
O namesake of the Chosen One, O my desire,
O beloved of the Chosen One, O my desire
O my soul's desire and my fortune in this life.
O delight of my soul and fortune of my time
عَلِقَتcaught hold of مِنكَfrom you بَنانيmy fingertips أَمَلاًa hope
لَيسَthere is not ليfor me مِنهُfrom it سِوىexcept عَضِّbiting بَنانيmy fingertips
My fingers caught hold of a hope from you;
My hopes have clung to you
It leaves me nothing but to bite my fingers.
I have nothing of them but biting my fingers
ياO غَزالاًgazelle صادَhunted آسادَthe lions of الشَرىal-Shara
وَقَضيباًand a slender bough قَدindeed سَبىtook captive سُمرَthe brown spears الطِعانِof spear-fighting
O gazelle that hunted the lions of al-Shara,
O a gazelle who hunted the lions
And slender bough that has taken the brown battle-spears captive.
And a spear that captured the summits of spears
بَرَّحَtormented الشَوقُlonging إِلىfor عَينَيكَyour two eyes بيme
عَجَباًhow strange أَصبواI yearn لِسَهمَيfor the two arrows of مَنthe one who رَمانيshot me
Longing for your eyes has tormented me.
Yearning has confused me for your eyes
How strange: I yearn for the two arrows of the one who shot me!
Strangely they have aimed their arrows at the one who shot me
لَوعَةٌburning anguish بيin me مِنكَfrom you أَمor بيin me لَمَمٌa touch of madness
ماnot النُهىreason وَالحُبُّand love إِلّاexcept طَرَفانِtwo extremes
Is it anguish from you within me, or a touch of madness?
In me is agony from you or stinging blame
Reason and love are but two extremes.
Prohibition and love are but two sides
قُلsay لِحِبِّto the beloved of الصَبِّthe lovesick one عَنهُon his behalf اِسلَمbe well وَكُنand be

مِنfrom سَلُوّيmy forgetting you وَاِصطِباريand my patient endurance فيin أَمانِsafety
Tell the lovesick one's beloved, on his behalf: 'Be well, and be
Tell the love of the youth to submit and be
Safe from my forgetting you and my patient endurance.'
Of my patience and composure in safety
شَغَفٌpassion قُيِّدَwas fettered ماnever يَبرَحُنيleaves me
وَفُؤادٌand a heart مولَعٌenamored بِالطَيَرانِof flight
A fettered passion that never leaves me,
A passion has tied me, I cannot escape
And a heart enamored of flight.
And a heart obsessed with flying
ضَمِنَتguaranteed طولَthe duration of غَراميmy passion مُقلَةٌan eye
تُتلِفُdestroys الأَنفُسَsouls فيin غَيرِabsence of ضَمانِliability
An eye has guaranteed my passion will long endure;
My long love guaranteed by a twist
It destroys souls without liability.
That destroys souls without a pledge
مائِلٌturning away بِالوُدِّin affection عَنّيfrom me نافِرٌshying away
مَرِحٌfrisky كَالمُهرِlike a colt يَطغىrebels فيin العِنانِthe reins
He turns his affection away from me, shying away,
Inclined with love yet averse from me
Frisky as a colt, defying the reins.
Frolicking like the untamed steed
لَيسَis not بِدعاًa novelty نَفرَةٌa shy recoil مِنfrom شادِنٍa young gazelle
فَرِقٍtimid أَوor ميلَةٌa swaying مِنfrom غُصنِa bough of بانِthe bān tree
It is no wonder for a young gazelle to shy away
No wonder aversion from a branch
In fear, or for a bān-tree bough to sway.
Or bend from a flexing bough
فَرَّhe fled مِنfrom عَدنٍEden وَقَدand indeed بانَappeared clearly عَلىupon
حُسنِهِhis beauty آثارُهاits traces أَيَّutmost بَيانِclarity
He fled from Eden, and there appeared upon
It escaped from Eden, revealing
His beauty its traces, unmistakably clear.
Its beauty, what an expression!
فَجَرىso flowed فيin مَرشَفَيهِhis two lips كَوثَرٌKawthar

So Kawthar flowed between his lips,
It flowed in its lips like Kauthar
And two gardens blossomed on his cheeks.
And its cheeks reddened like two gardens

شَأنُthe way of مَنone who يَعذِلُreproaches فيهِover him غَيرُdifferent from شانيmy way
The reproachers condemned my openly declaring love for him;
The critic denounced my professing it
The way of one who reproaches me for him is not my way.
The matter of one who criticizes beyond his worth
الهَوىlove عِندِيَto me إيمانٌfaith فَلاand so no
بُدَّescape مِنهُfrom it فيin فُؤادٍa heart وَلِسانِand a tongue
Love, to me, is faith, and so there is no
Love to me is faith, so I must
Doing without it in heart and tongue.
Speak of it from my heart and tongue
