مُتَأخَّرٌ عَنهُ ولا مُتَقَدَّمُ

Love has come to a halt for me where you are, so I have

My passion halted where you are, so I have

No retreat from it, nor any advance.

Neither preceded nor lagged behind it.

أجِدُ المَلامَة فِي هَواك لَذاذةً

حُبَّا لِذِكرِك إن يَلُمنِي اللُّوَّمُ

حُبَّا لِذِكرِك إن يَلُمنِي اللُّوَّمُ

I find reproach for loving you a delight,

I find blame for loving you a sweetness

Out of love for your being mentioned, if the reproachers blame me.

For love of your mention, though blamed.

أشبَهتَ أعدائِي فَصِرتُ أحِبُّهُم

أشبَهتَ أعدائِي فَصِرتُ أحِبُّهُم

إذ كَان حَظِّي مِنك حَظِّي مِنهُم

إذ كَان حَظِّي مِنك حَظِّي مِنهُم

You resembled my enemies, so I came to love them,

Since my lot from you was the same as my lot from them.

Since my share of you is my share of them.

أمَّنتَنِي فَأمنتُ نَفسِي صامداً

You granted me safety, so I trusted myself, standing firm.

Can someone of little worth to you be among those honored?

Is there anyone you slight among those you honor?
