نَفسيmy soul فِدىa ransom for موسىMusa وَإِنand even though لَمdid not تُبقِleave ليfor me
أَلحاظُهُhis glances نَفساًa soul بِهاwith it أَفديهِI ransom him
My soul be Musa's ransom, though his glances have left me
My soul I'd sacrifice for Musa, though his glances
no soul with which to ransom him.
Leave me no soul with which I'd ransom him.
يَهديhe guides إِلىto دينِthe faith of الصُباةِthe lovestruck وَحُسنُهُand his beauty
آيٌّsigns يُضِلُّhe leads astray بِهِنَّby them مَنwhoever يَهديهِhe guides him
He guides to the faith of the lovestruck, and his beauty
He guides to the faith of youth, and his beauty's
is a set of signs by which he leads astray those he guides.
A verse that leads astray whomsoever it guides.
فَعَلَتperformed فِعالَthe deeds of عَصاthe staff of الكَليمِthe one God spoke to لِحاظُهُhis glances
بِمُصَدِّقٍupon one who believes دَعواهُhis claim لاnot يَعصيهِhe disobeys him
His glances worked as did the staff of the one God spoke to,
His glances act as Moses' staff did, their magic
upon one who believes his claim and does not disobey him.
Confirming his claim - none can disobey them.
تَسعىmoves لِقَلبِtoward the heart of الصَبِّthe lovesick lover مِنهاfrom them حَيَّةٌa serpent
أَودَتbrought death بِهِupon him لَسعاًby biting فَمَنso who يَرقيهِchants a healing charm over him
A serpent from them slithers toward the lovesick lover's heart;
For the youth's heart a serpent strives with its sting
it has killed him with its bite—who can heal him with a charm?
To injure it - who will find the cure?
وَأَرىand I see قُلوبَthe hearts of العاشِقينَthe lovers تَحَيَّرَتhave become bewildered
مِنbecause of تيهِهِhis haughtiness فيin مِثلِthe like of قَفرِthe wilderness of التيهِal-Tih (the Wandering)
And I see the lovers' hearts bewildered
And lovers' hearts perplexed I see, lost in the desert
by his haughtiness, as in the wilderness of al-Tih.
Of passion, wandering endlessly, nowhere to flee.
جَدَّgrew intense الغَليلُthe burning thirst وَلَوand if أَرادَhe wished تَفَجَّرَتgushed forth
مِثلَlike العُيونِthe springs لَناfor us مَراشِفُthe lips of الفيهِhis mouth
The burning thirst grew fierce; had he wished, there would have gushed
So long has ardor burned that, were they to try,
for us, like springs, the lips of his mouth.
Tears would pour forth like springs from their eyes.
شَقَّتparted ظُبىthe blade-edges of أَلحاظِهِhis glances بَحرَthe sea of الهَوىpassion
شَقَّthe cleaving of العَصاthe staff لِلصَبِّfor the lovesick lover كَيso that تُرديهِthey destroy him
The blades of his glances parted the sea of passion,
His glances cut through the sea of love, as Moses' staff
as the staff did, for the lovesick lover, so they might destroy him.
Once cleft the sea - none could it deny.
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen أَمعَنتُI ventured far فيهِinto it مُغَرِّراًrisking myself
أَغرَقنَنيthey drowned me مَعَwith جُندِthe army of صَبريmy patience فيهِin it
Until, when I ventured deep into it, risking myself,
Till, when in them deeper I peered deceitfully,
they drowned me in it, together with the army of my patience.
They drowned me and my army of patience utterly.
فَدَعَوتُهُso I called to him إِنّيindeed I بِحُبِّكَin your love مُؤمِنٌa believer
لَوif only أَنَّthat إيمانَthe faith of الشَجيthe sorrowful lover يُنجيهِsaves him
So I called to him: "Indeed, I am a believer in your love."
So I called to him, "For your love a believer am I,
If only the sorrowful lover's faith could save him!
If only the faith of the thorntree could save him!"
