And lose yourself in love for the one you love,
And leave the reproacher to admonish you.

For God has given you dominion,
And adorned you with beauty's necklace,

And a soul you have afflicted with torment,
Together with abasement, yet it loves you.

Then, when he saw my state, he said,
With pride and coy assurance:

كَذاك الجَوهرُ الغَالي
هُوَit المُكتَسَبُthe prize to be won العَالِيlofty
هُوَ المُكتَسَبُ العَالِي
Such is the precious jewel:
It is the lofty prize to be won.

And what use is your exalted rank,
If you strike your servant dead?

So be gentle, or persist in your complaint;
Perhaps he will be pleased with you.

Your eyes made me drink wine,
With the wafts of your fragrance.

So indulge my sweet intoxication
With a sip from between your front teeth.

He sees that I am his slave—
A beloved who has no equal,

And no access to him, nor any promise.
Then, if I reproach him, he sings:

أَنَا وَاللهِ أَهوَاكَا
وَأَهوَاكَاand I love you وَأهوَاكَاand I love you

I love you, by God,
And I love you, and I love you,

And I wish for you what I wish
For myself—and that is enough.
