قَلبُheart المُعَنَّىthe lovesick one مِنof خَيَالِكَyour image مَأnot خَلاَwas empty
وَالنَّومُand sleep بَعدَكَafter your departure يَاO حَبيبِيmy beloved ماnot حَلاَwas sweet
The lovesick one's heart has never been without your image.
The heart's meaning from your imagination has become filled
And sleep since you left, my beloved, has held no sweetness.
And after you, my love, sleep never came
فأنَأfor I الَّذِيthe one who بِهُيَامِهِwith his ardent longing وَغَرَامِهِand his passion
أهوَاكَI love you يَاO قَمَراًmoon عَلىat رَأسِthe head of المَلاَthe assembly
For I am the one who, in his longing and passion,
So I who with passion and love for you
loves you, O moon, before all assembled.
Adore you, O moon at the head of the assembly
لَمَّاwhen رَآنِيhe saw me فِيin هَوَاهُlove for him مُتَيَّماًenslaved by love
عَرفَknew الحَبِيبُthe beloved مَقَامَهُhis standing فَتَدَلَّلاَso he played coy
When he saw me enslaved by love for him,
When he saw me lovelorn in passion for him
The beloved knew his standing and so played coy.
The beloved knew his standing and so he indulged
فَلَكَso yours is الدَّلاَلُcoyness وَأنتَand you بَدرٌa full moon كَامِلٌperfect
وَيَحِقُّand it is fitting لِلمَحبُوبِfor the beloved أنto يَتَدَلَّلاَact coy
So yours is coyness, for you are a perfect full moon.
So for you is this indulgence, and you are a perfect full moon
And the beloved is entitled to be coy.
And it is fitting for the beloved to indulge
