أمِنis there any بَشِيرٍbearer of glad tidings إلَىto مُضنَاكَthe one you have worn down بِالفَرَجِof relief
يَاO مَنyou who تَبَسَّمَsmiled عِنrevealing دُرِّpearls وعنand revealing فَلَجِgaps between teeth
Is there a bearer of glad tidings of relief for the one you have worn down?
A harbinger of good news for your distressed, of relief,
O you who smiled, revealing pearls and gaps between your teeth!
O you who smiled from a pearl and from a stream,
حَسبيenough for me نُجُومُthe stars الدُّجىof darkness بالسُّهدِto sleeplessness تَشهدُbear witness ليfor me
إنif لَمnot تَزُرyou visit وَبَهِيمُand the pitch-darkness اللَّيلِof night بِالرَّبحwith gain
Enough for me that the stars of darkness bear witness to my sleeplessness,
My witnesses are the stars of nightfall testifying for me,
If you do not visit—and the pitch-black night testifies to gain [wording unclear].
If you do not visit while the night beasts profit,
السَّيفُthe sword والسَّهمُand the arrow والميزانُand the scales مِنكَfrom you غَدَتhave become
فِيin مُهجَتِيmy heart's blood والجفونand the eyelids والحًَشَاand the entrails الخُرُجِunclear as written
Your sword, arrow, and scales have come to be
The sword, the arrow and the scale came from you
In my heart's blood, my eyelids, and my entrails [final word unclear].
Into my temples, my eyelids and my protruding ribs,
دَاءُthe sickness الهَوَىof love بِفُؤَادِيin my heart لاَno دَوَاءَremedy لَهُfor it
إلاَّexcept شِفَاهُthe lips اللَّمَاof dusky hue مِنfrom ثَغرِكَyour mouth البَهِجِradiant
The sickness of love in my heart has no remedy,
The illness of passion in my heart has no cure
Except the dusky lips of your radiant mouth.
Except the lips of union from your radiant mouth,
بِاللهِby God سَلask ثَغرَكَyour mouth الدُّرّيَّpearly عَنabout ظَمَئِيmy thirst
وَرِيقَكَand your saliva البَارِدَcool المَعسُولَhoney-sweet عَنabout وَهَجِيmy burning heat
By God, ask your pearly mouth about my thirst,
For God's sake, ask your pearly mouth about my thirst
And your cool, honey-sweet saliva about my burning heat.
And your cool sweet saliva about my ardor,
مَالِيwhat use have I بِرُوحِيfor my soul التيwhich فيin الحبّlove مذsince تَلِفَتit perished
إنif لَمnot تَكُنyou are أنتَyou yourself للشَّكوَىtoward the complaint بِمُنعَرِجِinclined
What use is my soul to me, since it perished in love,
What can I do with my soul that perished in love
If you yourself will not turn toward my complaint?
If you are not there for my lament and refuge,
قطعتI cleaved لَيلِيmy night بسيفِwith the sword السُّهدِof sleeplessness حتَّىuntil غَدَاit became
مِنfrom لَحظِthe glance غَنجِكof your coquettishness عَبداًa slave سارِقاًstealing دَعجdarkness of eyes
I cleaved my night with the sword of sleeplessness, until it became
I spent my night cutting it with the sword of Suhad till it became
A slave stealing the darkness of eyes from your coquettish glance.
From a glance of your coyness, a fleeting pilfering slave,
طَالَgrew long وَاللَّيلand the night إذwhen هَجرتyou forsook
حَتَّىuntil ظَنَنتُI thought بِأنَّthat الصُّبحَdawn لَيسdoes not يَجِيcome
And the night grew long when you forsook me,
Long has the night been as you deserted
Until I thought that dawn would not come.
That I imagined dawn does not come
