- أبك الدماء وقل لمصر قد عفاWeep blood, and tell Egypt: now lies in ruin
- اسمع نصيحتنا إن كنت ذا بصرListen to our counsel, if you have insight.
- ألا يا ضيف هل وجب الفرارAh, O guest, must you flee?
- البحر يمضع ان بهThe sea chews if, through it,
- البدر يشرف إن ببرج الحمل حلThe full moon is exalted if it settles in the sign of Aries,
- الحكم حكمك والرضاء رضاكاThe decision is yours, and yours the approval.
- الروض باكرها الغمام وهزهاClouds visited the garden at dawn, and it was stirred
- الله أعظم هكذا الاسلامGod is greatest! Thus
- الله أكبر ساد الحق وانتصراGod is greatest! Truth prevailed and triumphed.
- الناصر المحمود أنتYou are the praised champion—
- إلى العطف حركنا الركاب وعرجناToward al-ʿAtf we set the mounts moving and turned aside
- أمحمد بن الشيخ يا فخر القضاO Muhammad, son of the Shaykh, pride of the judiciary,
- أمصر طربت لكن ليس هذاO Egypt, you rejoiced, but this is not
- أهدى الحبيب إلى الحبيب رسالةThe beloved presented the beloved with a letter,
- أهدي السلام تحيةI offer peace as a greeting
- أهديت يا بدر من أقوالكم غرراYou offered, O Badr, choice gems from your sayings,
- أهلا وسهلا بالإمامWelcome, welcome to the Imam,
- أين نيلك أين خيلكWhere is your Nile? Where are your steeds?
- بشرى السلامة أشرقتGlad tidings of safety have shone forth
- بقصر مليكة العليا أقمناIn the fortress of Upper Melika we stayed,
- بلطيف شعرك مصطفى لطيفي غداThrough your graceful verse, Mustafa Latifi,
- بمحكمة الإسلام غرداية تعلوThrough Islam’s court, Ghardaïa rises high,
- بمحمد بن الأعرج الشهم اللبيبThrough Muhammad ibn al-A‘raj, gallant and discerning,
- بنداوكم جبل به شوك الكلاBandawkum is a mountain with thorny grass,
- بين الجبال وبين حوضBetween the mountains and the basin
- تدفق ماء معدني من الصخرThe flow of mineral water from the rock
- تفتح روض الأنس وابتسم الثغرThe garden of delight blossomed, and the lips smiled.
- تكلم ذا البليد بلا تأنThis dullard spoke without deliberation,
- جئنا الجزائر والأنوار ساطعةWe came to Algiers, the lights shining,
- حج وزار فغوىHe performed the pilgrimage and visited, then went astray;
- حمام قربس أبدى من منافعهThe baths of Korbous have revealed among their benefits
- ختم الرسالة ربنا بمحمدOur Lord sealed the prophetic mission with Muhammad,
- دار الخلافة يا لهاAbode of the Caliphate—what an abode!
- دعك من هذا فماذاLeave that aside—what, then,
- رجب علوت وقد رأى منك العداRajab Alawat, seeing your enemy
- رسول جاء بالبشرA messenger came with good tidings
- روجت نفسك حسبماYou have composed yourself as
- روح المحب مع الاحبة قد سرىThe lover’s soul has journeyed by night with the loved ones,
- زفت معارف تونسTunis's Maʿarif was led forth as a bride
- سر بالأمان عبيد الله ممتطياGo safely, ʿUbayd Allāh, astride
- سعد الأمين وأزهرت أفراحهAl-Amin rejoiced, and his joys blossomed.
- سلام يا إمام المسلميناPeace, O imam of the Muslims,
- سليمان هل حررت في نظمنا نكدSuleiman, have you noted vexation in our verse,
- طاب الحديث بذكر المطربات فذاThe talk was good with the mention of the singers, so
- طابت صفاتك مصطفى فتهللتYour qualities are noble, Mustafa, and so beamed
- طرب الهزار وعمت البشرى فماThe nightingale sang in rapture, and glad tidings spread—what
- طربت بنا ريح النسيمThe gentle breeze rejoiced with us
- ظننا الجو خال من مجيبWe thought the air devoid of anyone to answer—
- ظهرت محاسن ذا الزمان فقابلتThe beauties of this age appeared, and I welcomed them
- عام جديد عاد فالبشرى بهA new year has returned—glad tidings of it!
- عبث السرور بمهجتي ولسانيJoy toyed with my heart and tongue,
- عقد بدا في الليل منفسخ فلاAn agreement made at night is dissolved; so do not
- على منبري أهدي التحية للجمعFrom my pulpit, I offer greetings to the gathering.
- فغدت رياض العلم مزهرة فياSo the gardens of learning blossomed—O
- في جيشها الجرار منIn her vast army is one who
- قاضي الإسلام داوود البطلJudge of Islam Dawood the hero
- قدر تم فبسطتم سحب حلمكمA decree was fulfilled, so you spread the clouds of your forbearance,
- قدمت وقد سست البوادي والجبلYou arrived, having governed the desert regions and the mountain.
- قريظ همام طافح اليمن حمدانThe verse of Hamdan—a noble man brimming with good fortune,
- قصر البخاري هل يممت يا صاحHave you made for Qasr al-Bukhari, my friend?
- قصر السعادة دم بالله محروساPalace of Happiness, remain guarded by God,
- قفا نبك أطلالا تقلص ظلهاHalt, you two; let us weep over ruins whose shade has dwindled.
- قل للجواد يجود لي بجوادTell the generous one to bestow a steed on me.
- قل لمن تاه دلالا وهوىSay to him who struts in coy pride and desire:
- قم يا محمد يا ختام المرسلينRise, O Muhammad, O last of the messengers.
- كوكب المغرب في برج الأسدThe star of the Maghreb, in the sign of Leo,
- لامني بعض رجال العلمI was reproached by some men of
- لأنس بين زيتون وزرعSurely, conviviality among olive trees and crops,
- لبست التاج تاج الفخر كيماI donned the crown—the crown of pride—to show
- لكن حلال شربها طيبBut drinking it is lawful and pleasant.
- للغرب أنت وللمشارق مرجعFor the West and the eastern lands, you are an authority.
- لها في الجبال الشامخات معاقلHers are strongholds in the towering mountains.
- ليتها الغربة تقضي بعجلIf only exile would end swiftly,
- ما الفخر بالأهرام عندي حجةTo me, pride in the pyramids is no proof.
- ما بالكم لم تفوا بالعهد وانفصلتWhat ails you? You have not kept the covenant, and severed are
- ما بالها تلك الظباء نراهاWhat ails those gazelles we behold?
- ما ترقى الهند إلاIndia rises only
- ما لي أرى حبل المواصلة انفصمWhy do I see the cord of contact snapped,
- ماذا أقول وقد وقفت بموقفWhat shall I say, now that I stand in a position
- مدينة شلف يا عتيقة آثارCity of Chlef, O you of ancient monuments,
- نصول اذا حان الدفاع ولا نرىWe charge when the time for defense comes, and expect no
- هذا ابن يوسف حجة الإسلامThis is Ibn Yusuf, the proof of Islam,
- هذه آثارنا فادع لناThese are our traces; pray for us,
- هذه دار همامThis is the house of a noble man,
- هذي المدينة فانزل بي حواليهاThis is the city; so alight with me in its environs.
- هل ذا اغتياب عن هوىIs this backbiting prompted by desire,
- هنيئا بالرفاء وبالبنيناCongratulations, with harmony and sons,
- هنيئا عزت المختار فاسعدCongratulations, Izzat, the chosen one—rejoice!
- هي الحياة تجددت بقواناLife itself has been renewed by our strength.
- والي الولاية حاميها وحافظهاGovernor of the province, its protector and guardian,
- وجب الثناء على جماعة جادوPraise is due to the people of Jadu,
- وداعا يا ديار العز حتىEnglish translation unavailable
- وللجلفة الفخر العظيم وحزبهاAnd great glory belongs to Djelfa, and its community
- ولما أن رجعنا للديارAnd when we returned to our homeland,
- يا رب صل على النبيO Lord, shower blessings upon the Prophet—
- يا رئيس الخطابة ازددت قدراO master of oratory, you have risen in stature,
- يا سيد ما أنت إلا سيدO master, you are none other than a master.
- يريد المرء أن يعطى مناهMan wishes to be granted his desires;
