ذي الفضل والآداب والخلق العجيب
Through Muhammad ibn al-A‘raj, gallant and discerning,
possessed of merit, refinement, and remarkable character,
تسموrises تلمسانTlemcen افتخاراًin pride ولتعشand may she live
تسمو تلمسان افتخاراً ولتعش
فاسFez اذاwhen ماemphatic particle أمهاhe visits her هذاthis الأديبthe man of letters
فاس اذا ما أمها هذا الأديب
Tlemcen rises in pride; and long live
Fez, whenever this man of letters visits her.
حازhe attained الكياسةsagacity والسياسةand statecraft واعتلىand ascended
حاز الكياسة والسياسة واعتلى
متنcrest الفضيلةvirtue كيفhow لاnot وهوand he is الحسيبof noble lineage
متن الفضيلة كيف لا وهو الحسيب
He attained sagacity and statecraft, and ascended
the crest of virtue—how could he not, being of noble lineage?
ماnot خابfailed فرعa branch طابwas good أصلاin origin واكتسىand clothed itself in
ما خاب فرع طاب أصلا واكتسى
ثوبrobe العلاglory هيهاتfar be it! هيهاfar be it! أنto يخيبfail
ثوب العلا هيهات هيها أن يخيب
No branch with a sound root has failed, having donned
the robe of glory—far, far be it from failing!
