They sought knowledge and attained it;
They sought knowledge and attained
they abandoned the house of idleness.
They abandoned the home of stillness
هكذاthus مصرEgypt سرىspread فيthrough
هكذا مصر سرى في
جسمهاher body سمthe poison الكنودof ingratitude
جسمها سم الكنود
Likewise, in Egypt there spread through
Thus the poison of activity
her body the poison of ingratitude.
Flowed in Egypt's body
فتولىso he undertook الطبhealing فيهاin her
فتولى الطب فيها
فاضلa virtuous man وافيfaithful to العهودpledges
فاضل وافي العهود
Then her healing was undertaken by
So the loyal fulfiller assumed
a virtuous man, faithful to his pledges.
Medicine in it and aroused
فأثارso he roused الروحthe spirit بلindeed جدrenewed— (word continued)
فأثار الروح بل جد
دها—it (completes 'renewed it') منfrom عهدthe age هودof Hud
دها من عهد هود
So he roused the spirit—indeed, renewed
The spirit, rather the enthusiasm
it from the age of Hud.
Of its era from the era of Noah
ولذاand therefore الخضراءthe Green One قامتrose
ولذا الخضراء قامت
تبتغيseeking نسجthe weaving البرودof striped cloaks
تبتغي نسج البرود
And so the Green One rose,
And thus the green one stood up
seeking to weave striped cloaks.
Seeking to weave achievements
فهيso she فيin نيلattaining مرامa goal
فهي في نيل مرام
ونجاحand success وصعودand ascent
ونجاح وصعود
So she is attaining her aim,
She, in her ambition and
succeeding and rising,
Success and ascension
ماso long as غداbecomes ناصرهاher champion الناal-Na— (beginning of al-Nasir)
ما غدا ناصرها النا
صر—sir (completes al-Nasir) كبرقlike lightning فيamid رعودthunderclaps
صر كبرق في رعود
as long as her champion, al-Nasir, is
Her supporter never became
like lightning amid thunder.
Like lightning in the clouds
جنةa paradise تلفىshe is found وحيناand at times
جنة تلفى وحينا
جمرةan ember ذاتpossessing وقودfuel
جمرة ذات وقود
She is found to be a paradise, and at times
A paradise sometimes
an ember, full of fuel.
And a fire full of fuel sometimes
هكذاthus أوor else فالتغاضيthen turning a blind eye
هكذا أو فالتغاضي
خيرthe best آلاتmeans الردودof replies
خير آلات الردود
Thus—or else, turning a blind eye
That is how overlooking
is the best means of reply.
