The verse of Hamdan—a noble man brimming with good fortune,
Hamdan of overflowing generosity and peace
the namesake of Ibn Qays—congratulated me on my well-being.
Is the son of Qays, exalted and sublime

So I spoke impromptu, proclaiming his excellence:
So I say spontaneously, displaying his perfection:
He is an ocean of knowledge, his standing without equal [wording unclear].
He is the ocean of knowledge, none can match his rank

He has fresh literary grace; his speech is pure gold.
Of gentle, lucid eloquence is his speech
His character is lofty—how admirable is Hassan!
Of noble, lofty morals his manners and trait

And how could it be otherwise, when Abd al-Qadir, that mountain, is his teacher?
And how not, when Abdul Qadir is his mentor
How noble, then, the pupil of a wellspring of knowledge!
Honouring his student, a fountainhead of wisdom

In praise of you, verses of glory for mankind

You took the lead and gained distinction; remain honored.
You preceded and obtained virtue, so remain honoured
And declare openly: 'Al-Baruni has saluted me.'
And say, announcing: al-Baruni lives

Accept—may God protect you—from a mind sincere
May God protect you, with your sincere thoughts
in love for you, this verse, and conceal its evident flaw.
Yours is love in verse, though the critic blames

For you are a brother, and people are brothers in faith.
You are a brother, and people in faith are brethren
And is shunning my brothers the way of fairness?
Does the creed of fairness forsake its fellows?

Yes—then no! For concord is imperative.
No, never! For harmony is incumbent
And deem deprived everyone who displays discord [uncertain reading].
And none who sow discord deserve but deprivation

We have learned from the days the harm of our division.
The days have taught us the ill of our divide
For victory lies in unity, O eye of my being!
Through unity lies triumph, O eye of mankind

I travel wounded, meeting men of distinction.
I travel and meet honoured men everywhere
They, like Hamdan, have a share of lofty thought.
Whose enlightened minds have Hamdan's fortune
