للغرب أنت وللمشارق مرجع

منك المعاند والمعادي يرهب

For the West and the eastern lands, you are an authority.

The obstinate and the hostile stand in fear of you.

أنت النذير لوقتنا ولعصرنا

علم الهداية للمعالي تندب

You are the warner for our time and our age,

a beacon of guidance, summoning us to lofty aims.

أنت الامام بك العوالم تقتدي

أنت الوحيد الشهم أنت الأهيب

You are the imam; the worlds follow your lead.

You are peerless and noble-hearted; you are the most awe-inspiring.

قطب الائمة أنت أنت بلا مرا

بحر الهدى منك اللآلى تطب

You are the axis of the imams; you are, beyond dispute,

a sea of guidance; from you pearls are sought.

أنت الذي أنسيتنا علم الألى

سبقوا وحكمة من مضوا يا كوكب

You have made us forget the learning of those

who preceded us, and the wisdom of those departed, O star.

أنت الملاذ لك المزار تقرب

منك الدعا بنجاحنا مستعذب

You are the refuge; visiting you is an act of devotion.

Prayer from you for our success is sweet.

شهد الانام بأن مثلك ناذر

في العالمين وليس مثلك يعتب

Humanity has testified that one like you is rare

throughout the worlds, and no equal of yours comes forth,

الا اذا جاد الزمان بكونه

فرعا لأصلك فالجواز الاقرب

unless time should graciously grant that he be

a branch of your root; that is the likelier possibility.

يا لجد نلت وبالتواضع والتقى

علما حقيقيا فصح المذهب

What diligence! Through humility and piety you attained

true knowledge, and so the doctrine proved sound.

أحييت مندرس المعارف فانثني

يختال في أوج السعادة مصعب

You revived forgotten learning; then returned

Mus'ab, strutting at the pinnacle of happiness.

أعطاك ربك والصلاة على النبي

ما يبهر الالباب مما تكتب

Your Lord has given you—and blessings upon the Prophet—

what dazzles minds in the things you write.

أزريت بالرازي وبالكشاف مع

روح البيان ولو رأوا لاستعجبوا

You outshone al-Razi and al-Kashshaf, along with

Ruh al-Bayan; had they seen, they would have marveled.

حللت معضلة المعالم فانجلى

للسعد أنك فاتح ما استصعب

You solved al-Ma'alim's difficult problem, and it became clear

to al-Sa'd that you unlock whatever proves difficult.

ما للمبرد والخليل وافلح

غير اتباعك في الذي قد أشربوا

Al-Mubarrad, al-Khalil, and Aflah have no course

but to follow you in what they had been steeped in.

فوفاؤك الروض الأنيق محجة

هميانك المكنون شهد أعذب

So your Wafa is a graceful garden, a clear path;

your hidden Himyan is honey sweeter still.

إكليلك المسبوك تاج النيل بل

شرح الدعائم في الإجادة أغرب

Your cast Iklil is the crown of al-Nil; nay,

your commentary on al-Da'a'im is yet more wondrous in excellence.

قلدت جيد العلم عقداً فاخراً

فعلا بك الدين الرضي الأصوب

You adorned learning's neck with a splendid necklace,

and through you the well-pleasing, truest faith rose high.

بالعلم نلت لدى الملوك مكانة

علياء يقصر عن ذراها المعرب

Through learning you attained among kings a station

so lofty that the eloquent speaker falls short of its summits.

هذي فرنسا دولة الإفرنج قد

جلتك فاعترفت بأنك المطلب

Here is France, the state of the Franks, which has

honored you, acknowledging that you are the one sought.

والزنجبار من الجنوب مليكها

أولاك فخرا نعم هذا المنصب

And Zanzibar in the south—its king

bestowed honor upon you: what a fine rank this is!

عش يا ابن يوسف ما المجرة في السما

روحا لدين الله بدرا ترقب

Live, O son of Yusuf, as long as the Milky Way is in the sky,

a spirit for God's faith, a full moon watched for.

هذا البروني أم بابك زائراً

منك الدعاء مع الرضا يستوهب

Here is al-Baruni, who sought your door as a visitor,

seeking from you the gift of prayer and approval.

غضب الأمير بدون داع ضره

فإذا غضبت فأين أين المهرب

The prince's anger without cause has harmed him;

so if you grow angry, where, where is there escape?
